Overweight

Hi everyone,

This month we tried for the first time to get pregnant. Everyone around me kept saying it wouldn't work the first time anyway, etc. But it actually worked the first time! I'm so happy about it, but I have overweight (BMI 39). I'm now a bit past 4 weeks and I'm still worried. I lost 7 kilos before the pregnancy and of course I won't consciously diet now, but I'll eat healthy. I'm looking for women who are also pregnant with overweight and want to share their story. I know it's not good, but I didn't expect this so soon and I'm quite insecure about it and find it all really exciting now.

I also have excess weight and have been successfully pregnant and given birth twice. You'll probably hear that you should watch out not to gain too much weight, and you'll be checked extra for sugar. (There's a limit where you can no longer stay with a midwife and have to go to an OB-GYN, I think, but I don't know the exact limit.

The first time I gained 6 kg, and the second time even less. So I was always lighter after giving birth than before.
Just eat healthy and normally. What you can do is eat small amounts regularly and watch your carbohydrate intake.

    Good luck with your pregnancy!

I'm really curious to read the replies, so please join in. I'm currently trying to get pregnant. I also have excess weight and am a bit older. Sometimes I'm worried that this might be a reason it won't work out anymore. So I'd love to read how more people experience this.

    Hi hi,

I’ve also been thinking about weight. My BMI is 39 and I’m now 15 weeks. Everything is going well, and I feel good too.
I was told that a home birth isn’t an option anyway, and that I’ll be giving birth in the hospital. Even if the pregnancy goes smoothly.
I understand the reasoning behind it, but I’m still a bit disappointed. I’d really prefer a home birth.
As for eating, I just eat very little, purely because I get nauseous if I eat more. I’ve gained 1 kilo so far, and who knows how things will go from here.
I was on the contraceptive pill for 2 years and didn’t get my period again until 8 months later. Then it took 11 months before we got pregnant. This was because my hormonal balance was off. Once we addressed that, it happened pretty quickly. 2 weeks?
I personally believe that every body reacts differently and is built differently. Yes, being overweight might lead to complications, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Slimmer women can also face problems. It’s just about how your body reacts. And if everything feels good, then just enjoy it.

    Best wishes

@37 years old, sorry I didn't know how to address you haha! Your weight might be related to your fertility, but this doesn't necessarily mean anything! I'm now 20 weeks pregnant and just passed the 20-week mark, and everything is going great! Anyway, you'll probably not go to a midwife but to the hospital because that's necessary with being overweight. Honestly, I find that quite nice. I also like the idea of giving birth in the hospital. No one has judged me so far! Or well, made comments. Maybe behind my back, but people do that anyway
@ 30 years old (sorry too) I wouldn't worry too much about a BMI of 29. Worrying just causes stress. It's easier said than done, but since we thought it would take a long time, we just took it easy and said "we'll see" and probably because of that relaxed attitude, it went well right away.
