Marilyn of Marilien

How do you pronounce the name Marilyn?

We want to pronounce it in Dutch, like Marie-lien. But we often hear it pronounced as Marie-lin or Mary-lin, in the English way.

Do you know if there are really rules for pronouncing a name? We could of course change the name to Marilien, but we think that's less beautiful. So we're wondering if our pronunciation is really wrong or not.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

    I'd say Marilyn.

You don't pronounce it "al-ee" as far as I know. I do think it looks nicer indeed, but if I see the name Marilyn, I'd pronounce it as "Mari-el."

This isn't the answer you were hoping for, I guess, but this is just my opinion, and you should do what feels right for you, of course. People get used to things everywhere, but I think you should probably ask a few people to correct it first. As long as you don't find it annoying yourself, follow your gut!

    I'd say go with Merlin.
