early miscarriage

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and hopefully someone can give me some advice.

Last week I tested positive with a Clear Blue; 1-2 weeks pregnant. We were so happy! (First baby)

However, I started having brown discharge when wiping the day before yesterday. The next day I would have been five weeks. Unfortunately, I started bleeding when wiping exactly at five weeks. (yesterday) Now today I'm still wiping away quite a bit of blood and mucus. I just took a test and the line is barely visible anymore.

Because it was so early I didn't call a midwife, also because I was sure, and now am sure, that it's a miscarriage. I don't have a fever, there's no heavy bleeding and I don't have cramps in my belly anymore today.

My question is whether I should call a midwife now, or if I can just wait for my next period.

Of course I'm sad and feel guilty, although I read everywhere that it's something in the cell division that I have no influence on and which causes the body to shed it.

Does a miscarriage have consequences for a second pregnancy? And how long do you bleed in such an early stage?

Does it just stay at bleeding and is that the miscarriage? Or is this just the beginning and can I expect more? The test shows only a very faint line, which makes me almost think I've already lost it..

Long story but hopefully you can give me some advice.

Love, Amy

    Hi Amy,

I totally relate to your story. On March 2nd, I also had a positive test (1-2 weeks with Clearblue). The next day I had some brown discharge, so I tested again, but the line was barely visible anymore, which meant I had an early miscarriage at 4.5 weeks.

I had quite a bit of bleeding for about 4-5 days back then, and my GP referred me to the gynecologist just to be safe, to do an internal ultrasound to see if everything was "gone." Luckily, that was the case for me.

Feeling guilty doesn't help at this stage; unfortunately, you couldn't have prevented it. I then started counting my cycle again from the day of the miscarriage, which was the first day of my period. Now, 3.5 months later, I'm over 11.5 weeks pregnant.

So, I got pregnant right after the miscarriage and have my dating scan appointment tomorrow.

My advice: call your GP or gynecologist just to be safe. Wishing you lots of strength and good luck.

    Dear Moi31,

You have no idea how happy I am with your reply. It means a lot to me. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I'm going to discuss your advice with my boyfriend tomorrow, and maybe we'll still call the GP for an ultrasound.

In the meantime, I'm barely bleeding anymore. It's really silly, but deep down I keep hoping that it's not true, and that if I take a test, it would show a mega dark line! My mind tells me that's impossible.

It's intense that you went through the same thing; your story really resonates! And I see that you're now eleven weeks pregnant! Congratulations! May I ask if the previous miscarriage has any impact on this pregnancy? Are you, for example, anxious? Or can you put it aside and enjoy it?

I have a constant feeling of unease and am already afraid that this might last a year... I'm 31! But your story gives me hope again. I hope I can let go of it all a bit. I think it would have been easier if age wasn't such a big factor in my head

Hey Amy, that's really tough for you if you indeed had a miscarriage. I also had a miscarriage in February without even knowing I was pregnant (I did have a feeling and symptoms, but before I could confirm with a positive test, I got the miscarriage). I was also pregnant despite the pill, so it was unplanned for me, but if it hadn't been a miscarriage, it would have been wanted, so I didn't focus on trying for a new pregnancy afterward. But what I do know is that you're more fertile after a miscarriage than usual. At least that's what I've read Wishing you lots of success and hope that you'll get a lasting positive test this time!! Lots of love

    Hi Amy,
Good news: I'm not anxious during this pregnancy. I had the ultrasound this morning, and it turns out I'm 12 weeks along. I'm also 31, almost 32, so I was worried I'd have to wait years.
But I'm enjoying this pregnancy. It helps to know I couldn't have changed anything anyway. Don't worry about the age—women in the Netherlands are around 30 when they have their first child. Good luck!

Photo not visible: I'm wondering if I had a miscarriage. My partner had help 10 years ago, but yesterday I had mild stomach cramps. I thought it was my period, with bright red blood, but 3 hours later a clump with stringy bits came out. It looks like clots, but there's also a transparent string attached, and it's quite thick.
