What kind of person do you think of when you hear the name Merle?

I told a friend recently that I want to name her Merle, and she replied that I shouldn't do that; she immediately pictures a depressed, grumpy, chubby kid.
I thought it was a very strange reaction, but now I'm starting to doubt myself. What do you all think? What kind of person do you associate with Merle?

    Not exactly a nice reaction either.
    I think it's a beautiful and original name, but honestly, that doesn't really matter. If you and your partner think it's nice, that's enough Hopefully your girlfriend didn't ruin it for you both.

    I don't know anyone with the name Merle, but I picture a tough, serious girl when I hear the name Merle.

    Nothing wrong with the name. That's just your friend's opinion. What matters is whether you and your partner like the name—it's going to be Julie, after all. She could have kept her opinion to herself instead of being so negative and rude about it. Names are such a personal thing. It would be a shame if you ended up not giving your child the name you want because of her comments.
