Hi hi! A good friend of mine is pregnant, and I’m helping her think of a nice name (she doesn’t know the gender yet). Recently she said she wants a typical name for “hopeful parents.” What names would you think of?
Don't get why everyone's reacting so weirdly... Names for highly educated people are just a thing.
You should just Google NRC or hockey names. You'll come across so many cute ones!
Well... I'd think you'd pick a name based on what you find beautiful, not based on your education... then our daughter should have been called Cathelijne or Charlotte-Sophie with two university-educated parents.. we chose what we found beautiful, not a name that suggests a certain background.. by even asking this, you're showing that you want to make a certain statement with the name, and hopefully you don't have children for that... so yes.. in my opinion, a weird question...
It's just that highly educated people tend to choose certain names (Julius, Frederique, Charlotte, Floris, Pieter, Leonore, etc.) more often than less educated people. You can find it weird, but overall, that's the truth.
Highly educated people in my circle also often go for 'simple, Dutch' names.
So: Frank Jaap Tom Joep Willem Pepijn Bas Guus Bart Bram Dirk
And
Femke Loes Juul Suus Jet Puck Janne Hanna Fien Marie
Generally speaking, it's true... but statistically, it doesn't hold up... and statistics come from research... our daughter is named Maeve, our friends' kids are Bobby and Pip, other friends have Pippa and Joes... all highly educated. So your "generally speaking" doesn't even apply in my circle... Statistically, certain names are more common above the rivers than below, but not within specific social classes... Again... you choose a name because you find it beautiful, because it suits you and, more importantly, because it suits your child... not because you come from a certain class. If you do, you're basing your choice on the wrong premises.
Everyone picks a name they think is beautiful (although there are some really weird names these days). But there's definitely some truth to the idea that certain names are more common in specific social circles.
You'll come across more ordinary Dutch or international names like Joep, Julian, etc., in more educated circles.
Floris, Frederique, etc., in the "goi" (snobs...;-)...just kidding)
And more names like Charity, D'Venay, etc., in multicultural or less educated communities.
That doesn't mean they don't appear in other social classes (however you want to call them). But statistically, they're more common. It doesn't mean that children of less educated parents can't become educated themselves, and vice versa.
But you're judged in this world, at least initially, by the social background of your parents. And most people do this, consciously or unconsciously.
And yes, I do think people should (and can) think about this for the sake of their child. I just wouldn't phrase the question that way.
I have to be honest, I'm not surprised by the names that sometimes come up in the language use of the vast majority of these forums. Let me just go for a name with certain associations, like many do given the many association questions they ask.
