amniocentesis

Hi everyone,

I had an amniocentesis 3 weeks ago. Got the full results this morning and everything was fine. We're so happy! The stress and tension you go through isn't fun at all. Now we can fully enjoy it.

Greetings, Tammi

    Congratulations!
    It must be a huge relief. Did you have a reason to get an amniocentesis? I’m 37 and had favorable results from the combined screening test, so we decided not to do an amniocentesis or CVS (we felt the risk of miscarriage was quite high).

    Hi Gerda, I'm also 38 years old, and here they let you have the amniocentesis done based on age.
    There was no other reason, and I chose to have it done. During my previous pregnancy, I also had an amniocentesis because something was wrong with the blood test, so I knew what I was getting into. Yes, and I understand that you don't want to do it because of the risks.
    But I'm so happy everything is okay.
    And Gerda, are you and the baby doing well?
    THANKS, GERDA!
    Greetings, Tammi

    I can imagine that after a previous pregnancy with not-so-great blood test results, there's still a bit of a scare. With our girl, everything is - as we know - completely fine. The NT scan at 12 weeks showed a 1 in 1011 chance of Trisomy 21, 1 in 6976 for Trisomy 18, and 1 in 21934 for Trisomy 13. My age alone gave a 1 in 130 chance of having a baby with Down syndrome, which lowered the value from 1 in 1011, but the measurements and my blood values ultimately resulted in a 1 in 1011 chance. Based on that, we decided not to do an amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. Five weeks ago, we had the 20-week ultrasound, and the heart was also checked thoroughly. There were no visible abnormalities, which is also very positive regarding Down syndrome.

    We don't know for sure if everything is 100% fine, but given the combined test and the NT scan, we have full confidence.

    What I'm wondering now: after this amniocentesis, do you still get the NT scan?

    @Tammie, congratulations on the good results! I can imagine you were really nervous... I'm also 39 weeks and my values were good too... These are our results: Trisomy 21 (Down) 1:1870, Trisomy 18 1:2849, Trisomy 13 1:6307. So we're out of the danger zone. We also had an SEO at 21 weeks and 2 days, and the results were good there too, so we're really happy and grateful...

    @Gerda,
    No, if you had an SEO at 20 weeks, that's the last one covered by your health insurance... If you want another one, you'll have to pay for it yourself.

    Love, Ju

    I actually meant whether you still get an SEO at 20 weeks if you've had an amniocentesis. It seems a bit redundant on one hand, but on the other hand, they can see things with an ultrasound that you can't see with an amniocentesis (I think), like spina bifida, cleft lip, heart defects, etc.

    @Gerda
    The amniocentesis results have now changed after 3 days. You know after 3 weeks whether the baby has Down syndrome, and you also find out about open spina bifida, cystic fibrosis, and other abnormalities.
    This has also changed in the past few years. Heart defects like cleft lip are checked via ultrasound.
    Congratulations on your good results!

    @Ju
    Thanks, yes, the nerves were definitely there. Glad it was all fine for you too.
    Yes, whether young or a bit older, we're part of it too.
    Congratulations and enjoy it!

    Hi Olivia, thanks, yeah, it's everyone's personal choice, of course.
    But you're much younger than me, I'm 38, and that's why I had it done.
    Yeah, but it'll all be fine for you, I'm sure.
    And yeah, the stress is gone, and that's really good now we can enjoy ourselves.
    Love, Tammi

    @Gerda,
    I don't know, so I can't answer that for you. Maybe you can ask the gynecology department.

    Love, Ju
