Baptism, choice of Peter/Meter

Hi everyone!

We're expecting our first baby in early January. We want to have our child baptized in the Catholic church. Baptism also involves choosing a godfather and godmother. We find this quite difficult.

We are both the eldest at home, and our brothers and sister are still quite young. So we're also hesitant to choose one of them, as that might be better suited for a second child. I had both my grandmothers as godparents since my parents faced the same dilemma. But it doesn't feel quite right to me because they are already the grandmothers. Then we come to our own uncles and aunts; mine are still quite young, but my husband's are older. We're thinking about asking an aunt, but she's already 60 and lives far away from us. So we're really torn.

It's a long story, but does anyone have tips or experiences?

Thanks in advance!

Do what feels right to you. I also have my grandparents as godparents. But if I were to have my child baptized (we've chosen not to), it would undoubtedly be my sister and my husband's brother who would be asked. It shouldn't be an obligation, but a conscious choice! And only you two can make that choice.

    Good luck!

    Hi,

We thought it would be nice to have younger people as godparents for our baby. We chose my sister and a nephew, both around 30. They also don't live too far away, about half an hour away, and we think the baby will see them the most. Later on, they can visit or come to them if something happens.

I wouldn't prefer to choose a grandparent or someone aged 60. But that's just our personal preference. Think about it again and see what you think is best. Just do what feels right.

Good luck with the choice! It's not easy.

I became a godmother at 14, it was such an honor! I don't know how old the siblings are... The responsibility isn't the same as it used to be, you know... Back then, the godparents were the ones who would take care of the kids if the parents passed away...

And now! My goddaughter Iris is 14, I'm 28. We always go shopping together twice a year... And I hope she'll be our babysitter when we have a baby...
I also have a godson Devon, almost 10... He loves gaming, and Martijn does too! So they've found each other.

    Thanks for the replies!
My sister is 16 and our brothers are 19, 21, and 22. I still find it a bit tricky, but hearing this, there are more young mamas and godparents out there!

My youngest sister has become my daughter's friend, and they're always together with her boyfriend for our little one!
She randomly shows up or calls... if only I had known this with my son! A distance of one meter feels like a huge challenge because she's 20 minutes away! Going out and shopping is fine for her!
Now I'm 3 months pregnant and find this really hard!!

My boyfriend and I also chose his sister to be the godmother, and she just turned sixteen too. She was overjoyed because she had been waiting a long time to become an aunt anyway, and we were really happy with this choice too.

    Best, Kimmie
