Hey everyone..
We're thinking of the name Tamar for a girl, but how would you pronounce it?
We say it as Tammar, but I heard someone this afternoon say it as Taámar.

Such a beautiful name! I pronounce it as Taamar, with the emphasis on "Mar." I also know the name pronounced with the stress on "Taa." I'm not familiar with the pronunciation "Tammar," but if you'd like to go with that, I'd definitely do it!

It never would have occurred to me to pronounce the name as tammar.
I pronounce it as taa-mar. Stress on taa.

I'd pronounce it as Taamar too. And preferably with the stress on 'mar'. Quite a nice name.

Okay, thanks for the replies. I'm still a bit unsure about the name. But my husband really wants this name if it's a girl. He knows someone who has that name and it was pronounced as 'Tahmar'. I think that sounds nicer than 'Taamar' too... hopefully, if we always say Tahmar, others will start doing the same too.

The worst thing that could happen is that you'll have to correct people. After that, they'll know!! That wouldn't be a problem for me. With today's names, you never know how to pronounce something!

That's true too... once people know how we pronounce it, it'll definitely work out fine.
And Mamatobe, it's nice that there are people who would pronounce it as Tahmar after all!
So I think we'll go with this name :-)
    Thanks for your responses!

My name is just Taamar. I get triggered when people call me Tammar.

    I also read Taamar.

If you want the pronunciation to be Tammar, then spell it with 2 Ms.

I think it really depends on whether the first 'a' is pronounced harder or softer, so you hear Taamar or Tahmar. But if you want it to sound like Tammer, you should spell it with two m's (though I don't think it's a very pretty name).

I meant Tammar. But I guess I immediately thought of Tammer. (Hammer, jammer)
