How to get pregnant healthily?

27 replies · page 1 of 2

Gewist
Hi everyone,
I'm new here.
I'm 24 years old and we're planning to try for a baby soon
I quit smoking 4 months ago and since then I've been snacking all day on unhealthy junk.
Because of this, I'm feeling much more tired and I still have digestive issues, etc.
I really want to change this before we actually start trying.
It's better for me and for the future little one
Are there any ladies who want to turn their lifestyle around together with me, for themselves and/or their (future) little one?
By the way, after more than a year off the pill, I still have irregular periods. Maybe eating healthier and exercising could help with that too.
Experiences/tips are of course also welcome

    Hi Bxx!
I had a gastric bypass (stomach reduction) and need to eat healthily since there's not much room in my stomach...and sometimes I find it hard.
So I'm happy to take on the challenge too!

By the way, almost 29 and in my 4th round.

    Hi Raisa,
Nice that you're responding and joining in
    What's your biggest pitfall?
For me, it's definitely hoarding a lot of stuff.
Also, I find it pretty tough to eat enough veggies haha.
It's nice that you're already getting things ready!

Hey, that's really good of you to quit smoking before you got pregnant. It shows discipline... and then it comes to me that the rest of your lifestyle, like healthy eating, is also pretty good.
I also quit smoking well before I got pregnant and then started snacking more. Don't be too hard on yourself... you're allowed to have something different now that quitting smoking isn't nothing. Build up healthy eating gradually... it doesn't have to happen overnight. Make agreements with yourself about how much healthy food you want to consume and how much you're allowed to snack on, and gradually expand that. And believe me... when you're pregnant later on... it'll be different again. Maybe you'll feel very nauseous. Maybe you can only tolerate very light food... who knows. Keep it up!

    Hi JojoB,
    What a nice message!
You're right, I do need to have some discipline in me, haha, otherwise stopping wouldn't have worked out either. Good to realize that now!
Maybe I'm being too hard on myself.. a bit of an all-or-nothing mindset, haha, but I'm working on it!
Making agreements at the start of the week with myself is indeed a good idea! I'll start doing that, hihi, thank you!
I hadn't thought about that last part yet, haha, do you have experience with it? But having a healthy body before getting pregnant will always be good!

Best remedy for binge eating = stop buying it

    My pitfalls are:
    - not enough veggies
    - portions that are too big
    - not eating enough protein
    - I have to eat alone regularly and find it hard to cook for myself then.

Haha, true.. For myself I often buy nothing, but for the others I do, and then I end up eating it all haha
The bread spreads (shaky tummies and speculoos paste etc.) are the culprit when there's nothing else at home really..

Cooking is indeed also a bit of a challenge for me.. and big portions too haha.
What does your eating pattern look like now? Maybe you can then see where, for example, it's easy to add more protein and vegetables. Are you a picky eater or not?
  9. Ysabel #10

That's so great of you that you quit smoking four months ago. This is not only good for the baby while you're pregnant, but also really good for your own health!
I'd love to join you in this, especially getting more exercise and eating less unhealthy food/snacks.

By the way, I'm 25 and this is round 1.
  10. Gewist started this #11

@Raisa; that's annoying! I'm also an emotional eater unfortunately. Besides that, it's often all or nothing for me too haha, I think that's exactly the pitfall!
Maybe we can come up with a goal/step each week and try/achieve that week? Every good step in the right direction counts.
By the way, can you still eat too much with a gastric reduction?

    @Ysabel; thank you hihih definitely!
What are you doing currently in terms of exercise?
Maybe it would also be nice to choose a goal per week? I think that works better than changing everything all at once.
Exciting round 1 hihih are you going for the first one?
  11. Ysabel #12

I'm actually not doing anything at all for healthy exercise right now. I did download a whole program with a detailed step-by-step plan—I'm curious if I'll stick with it???? I also bought running shoes last year with my boyfriend, and we actually ran exactly once. Really quite embarrassing.
Yes, we're really excited and we're going for the first one.
I read that you have irregular periods; I believe it can take quite a while for them to become regular again (if you had a regular cycle before). I had my IUD removed and suddenly my periods became irregular—like having my period twice in one month.

Oh haha, well I just started again on Tuesday too! What program did you download?
Haha, it's really something, but it could've happened to me too, hahahahaha.
Sounds pretty exciting too, really starting soon, hihi, but it's so nice!
Yeah, it can take a long time but I've been off it for 13 months now, so you'd think it should be normal again, haha, ugh, we're not robots!
Wow, twice a month, that sounds really tough! Do you get two ovulations then or how does that work?
  13. Ysabel #14

I'll check tonight what that program is called for you, maybe it's something for you too! (It's mostly exercises you can do at home) Haha, luckily I'm not the only one who finds it hard to stick to exercising.
It's all very exciting! 13 months of irregular periods is also quite long, especially when you're trying to conceive. With an IUD, I don't know exactly how long it takes before you get a normal cycle again. I also don't know if I had two ovulations then. I don't think so Honestly, I don't know when my ovulation was either, I haven't had a period for 6 years for this month haha.
  14. Raisa #15

I can't really eat much more, no. For example, max 1 to 1.5 brown bread slices for lunch.

As for exercise, I have a personal trainer twice a week. Super nice, it's already scheduled so I can't cancel
  15. Gewist started this #16

@Ysabel; fun! I love working out at home haha the gym is not for me.. at least not yet haha.
Ah so yes, that's a wait-and-see thing and we'll discover how it goes for you
It's true, but maybe a healthier lifestyle will help!

@Raisa; you're doing so well that's indeed a stick to beat them with haha.
Are you making bad choices with food now? Because you can't really have too large portions then?

Do you have a nice weekly goal for yourself? What to tackle first?
I'm going to think about it too!
  16. Raisa #17

Yeah, definitely made the wrong choices and messed up, every hour something that my stomach couldn't handle

Goal... drink lots of water and eat healthy evening meals
  17. Ysabel #18

I just looked up what that program is called. It's called Bikini Body Guide by Kayla Itsines. The files are really big and I got them through a friend. If you can't find or download them, I'd be happy to send them to you.
  18. Gewist started this #19

Raisa; oops, making good choices is indeed important! Especially when you're getting so little in terms of nutrients.
Nice goal! Does it help to plan dinner in advance, for example?

@Ysabel; thanks! I'll check it out, isn't that something you do very often per week? Have you started yet?

My goal is not to snack in the evening, but instead have some fruit or a snack like Jack's or something. Something healthier for sure. Hope that works out!
  19. Ysabel #20

You're doing something every day. (I've read everything, it's in English though) but it's easy to do. There's a daily plan with pictures showing what you 'should' do. Very clear.
How are you doing? Are you eating healthier already? I've bought extra fruit and I always like tomatoes and cucumbers with a little salt. I'm trying to eat that instead of candy now. - Not that it's working perfectly, haha
