Hi everyone!

I’d like to introduce myself. I’m 30 years old and have been trying to conceive for two years now.

After a year had passed and I still wasn’t pregnant, I was referred to a gynecologist.

We’ve been going through this for a year now. They’ve checked my partner’s sperm twice. The first time, he was sick and had only 1 ml with 3% good swimmers; the second time, it was 3 ml with 32% good swimmers. Not great results, but definitely not infertile. For me, ovulation has been confirmed via blood tests, and everything else looks fine. I was supposed to have a laparoscopy on January 6th because I didn’t dare have a contrast hysterosalpingogram since everything is very painful and stressful for me.

However... I found out on December 29, 2016, that I was pregnant! I was so incredibly happy and couldn’t believe it. Unfortunately, it came to an abrupt end when I woke up on December 31, 2016, and saw a lot of blood when urinating. I took a pregnancy test on Sunday, and it was already negative. I had to wait all weekend, and after a unpleasant New Year’s Eve, I got confirmation at the hospital on Monday that nothing was visible on the ultrasound anymore. The pregnancy hormone was also completely gone from my blood. What a misery those days were! I was only 5-6 weeks pregnant, but after two years, it was so desperately wanted! I now have to wait until February 25, 2017, to see if my cycle starts again.

I did an ovulation test today just to keep an eye on my body and learn as much as possible about my cycle, and now it turns out I’m ovulating exactly on my expected date. Just to be safe, we’ve already been having sex every other day for a week. This month, I’ve also started using Conceive Plus on my fertile days. We’re really liking it. It’s very easy to use, and I do have confidence that it might help us since the sperm quality isn’t all that great. Besides that, I’m already doing everything by the book when it comes to taking care of myself. The only thing that’s not ideal is that I have rotating shifts, but there’s little I can change about that now.

I hope it works out soon because I’m really fed up by now, and I hope it still works out naturally and sticks. And if not... well, then I’ll have that laparoscopy and see what comes of it. I still have full confidence that things will work out and stay positive

Fortunately, our relationship has only grown stronger since we started this journey; we’ve been together for eight years now.

If you have any advice for me, please let me know. I have questions regularly and will also ask for tips on this forum from time to time.

Keep hope, you only need 1 good sperm cell that lands in the right place at the right time.

What a setback, seriously. But keep hoping. As I read it now, you're really doing well and you're doing everything you can yourselves. Are you also able to keep a bit of mental distance?

One more question; I'm not necessarily in favor of the Medical roulette, mind you, but have you ever talked to the gynecologist about insemination. IUI without hormones but with your natural cycle. In that way, they filter the sperm as it were and ensure that only the good sperm cells are introduced. In this way, could you increase the chance??

    Thanks both for your support!
Yes Linda, I have definitely thought about that. But before we want to do that, I first need to be checked to see if everything is okay with me. After that, we will definitely try that if it hasn't worked out naturally by then.
Mentally it's going okay. I'm naturally a positive person and a go-getter. With the mk, I was of course completely overwhelmed for a while, but now I'm back to my old self. When faced with setbacks, I'm usually down for a bit, but luckily I pick myself up pretty quickly every time

    Hey Kit,
that's quite a story. I can really empathize with your experience. I myself had a rising positive test two weeks ago.. 3 days later it was mega white for me! I did go to the doctor for a blood test..but even there there was little hCG left to be found. I got a referral to the gynecologist to have everything checked. And the doctor also told me that I could wait for the "bleeding" or have it removed at the hospital.. so I didn't get a bleeding like you did right away. For now, I haven't had my period since November 2016. I wonder how long it takes before you can start "trying" again and everything gets back to normal. Well, it really is a deep, sad disappointment, isn't it! Especially when you've been trying for so long. I've already stopped trying almost 2 years ago and still haven't had any luck here unfortunately.

I also wonder how those first tests at the gynecologist work? What do you mean by the contrast fluid photo being very painful, if I may ask?

    Hey cat,
Well, now we can help each other out (unfortunately). Lots of similarities.
I've heard from several people in my immediate circle how such a contrast fluid scan works, and almost all of them found it to be a nightmare. One even said it was more intense than childbirth. I get really stressed with all the tests, and often that paper sheet gets soaked with sweat from anxiety. This is partly because I went to the gynecologist for 3 years due to abnormal Pap smears. During that time, biopsies were taken, which I found to be a disaster. They take small pieces of tissue from your cervix without anesthesia. I have ectropion, which makes it bleed faster and be much more painful. So the spots had to be cauterized with some special stuff. Since I stopped taking the Dianette pill (after 12 years!), my next test showed a normal Pap smear. So you see, it's all a mess, especially the Dianette pill.

But anyway, after all those tests, I've become much more cautious. My gynecologist suggested I could opt for a laparoscopy if needed. That way, they can see a lot more, which is an advantage. Recovery takes longer though, and well, it's still surgery with all the associated risks.

The first tests were internal ultrasounds for me. Then we started a cycle with ovulation tests. With a positive ovulation test, I had to get blood drawn to confirm that I actually ovulated. Fortunately, that turned out to be the case. Additionally, my partner had to give a sperm sample twice in a jar. This was because the first time it was so bad. The second time was okay. All in all, there's a lot of time spent on tests and waiting around in between.

Hey, I totally get that. I'm really scared of those kinds of things too. I've never been a fan of doctor and hospital visits, and I'm always quick to worry that something's wrong haha.

I've been using ovulation tests for about a year now, but unfortunately, I haven't gotten much further with them. That's why I'm visiting the gynecologist now. I'm curious what they're going to do.

Wishing you lots of success with the upcoming diagnostic laparoscopy. Who knows, maybe you'll get pregnant soon!

    Good luck!

Hey, I totally get that. I'm also really scared of those kinds of things. I don't really enjoy doctor and hospital visits anyway, and I'm always immediately worried that something's wrong with me, haha.

Good news: my cycle has returned to normal. I'll do some ovulation tests next month. In a week and a half, I'm going back to the hospital to schedule a laparoscopy for March. Exciting! I'm curious to see what they find during the surgery...

Well, here we go... I'm about to have my scope surgery. It's a one-hour operation; I thought it would be shorter. Hopefully, this will bring some clarity.
I'm really curious to see what they find anyway.

I got the results last night after the surgery. Everything looked perfect. No abnormalities at all, and my fallopian tubes were super open. In April, I have to go back for the next steps in the plan. It seems like it really is due to poor sperm quality. So hopefully, we can now move on to IUI or artificial insemination since everything else is fine with me.
And I'm going to try this cycle anyway, because apparently you're more fertile after being flushed. But first, I need to recover these days because I'm still in a lot of pain.
  11. Anonymous #12

Oh, that's so nice! Must be such a relief for you to know that you're completely okay! Sperm quality is indeed something you can really work on. Great that it's behind you now, and time to rest up! Hopefully back on your feet soon to tackle some projects hihi.. Get well soon!

By the way, I've been taking evening primrose oil for a month now and I've already had ovulation for 2 months in a row! I'm suddenly right on schedule as it looks now. So I've put in a lot of effort and now I'm on the grueling 2-week wait! But I already have a really nice feeling that I'll probably have ovulation every month from now on
  13. K started this #14

That's great, Cat89, that you now know when you ovulate, since that's where it all begins
I've recovered from the laparoscopy. It wasn't as bad as I thought! I only really had discomfort for about 2-3 days. The wounds are also very small and neat, thankfully.
I'm curious what the gynecologist will say in April, as that's when the next plan is. I hope it's IUI or IVF, and that we don't have to keep trying on our own anymore, because I'm kind of done with that. I really believe it's due to the quality of the sperm, since the count, volume, and motility are way too low.
  14. K started this #15

Since the laparoscopy, I’ve had another chat with the gynecologist.
We went through all the statistics again... it turns out my partner’s sperm quality is super good. Even above average. The 30% I’d been told about was the strong and fast sperm. However, there was also 35% slower sperm, but that’s supposed to be included in the count. I hadn’t understood this earlier, so I’d only been considering the 30% instead of the full 65%. There was also a portion with reduced motility and some poor-quality sperm that shouldn’t be counted. So, good news!
We’ve scheduled a follow-up in 3 months to move forward with insemination, even though everything is fine for both of us.
I’ve also fully recovered from the laparoscopy. That’s nice too
All in all, I feel good about it

    Wow k!
Our story is almost the same! I'm just 1 year older and didn't have any unpleasant side effects from the Dianapil.
I also have to have that laparoscopy. I had put it on hold for a while because I was going crazy with all the hospital visits. Tomorrow I'll call to finally schedule our appointment.
It gives me some hope to hear that everything looked fine with you. I really hope we'll get the same good news and can move on to IUI right away.
I'm really curious to hear how everyone's developments are going.

    Hey Skybles,
Just saw your message. Have you had your eye surgery yet? If so, how did it go?
I'm a few weeks further along now. In about 1.5 months I have to go back to plan the insemination. But these days I feel pregnant and it could very well be true because we worked hard around the last ovulation last Friday.
    I have these symptoms now:
Dizzy, nauseous, extremely tired (sleep peacefully for 10 hours straight to fall asleep again in the afternoon), very painful nipples (feel inflamed but aren't), thick white discharge, increased temp (37.4 normally I have 36.5), trouble eating healthy/neatly due to binge eating, a few days extremely hyper and hard to sleep (I had this with my previous pregnancy too), when I do fall asleep I dream extremely much and vividly, since today occasionally a stab in my lower belly, stool has changed (as hard as a stone, nice chat ). I also have oily spots in my bra where my nipples are. So apparently a chunky good stuff is coming out of my nipples at the moment.
I realize that my body can fool me for the umpteenth time. I've had lots of symptoms before and wasn't pregnant. We'll just wait and see... can only test next Friday
  17. skybles #18

Wow K, but those are really quite a lot of ailments You'd think......

No date has been set for the operation yet. I have to see the anesthesiologist on the 24th. Hopefully, they'll book me in ASAP.

We did our best during my last ovulation (May 10th), so I secretly still have a sliver of hope for... but I don't think I'll be that lucky.

I just want to say that your story gives me hope. Before I read your story, I really thought I'd have to say with near certainty that my fallopian tubes were blocked, nothing could be done about it, and I'd have to switch to IVF. Why else would they do a laparoscopy instead of an HCG test... but those were all just my assumptions.

I'm super curious how things go for you later. When should you expect your period??
  18. K started this #19

Super nice to read that my story gives you some hope
I had a late ovulation. Normally I should get my period on Tuesday, but based on the ovulation, it'll be Friday... haaaat this waiting period always
Hopefully you'll get your diagnostic laparoscopy soon and have more clarity too. It gave me so much peace of mind knowing everything is fine with both of us. And if something does turn up, it's better to know so action can be taken
  19. K started this #20

Well, my temperature stays high at 37.5, whereas it's normally around 36.5/8. I've also gotten veins on my chest and nipples since today. I'm going crazy waiting until I can test... I really feel pregnant, but yeah, I can fool myself. I have a weird feeling in my lower belly and the same stabbing pains as before I had my miscarriage. I hope it so incredibly much!
I'm also extremely hyper/creative. I'm going all out redecorating the house and everything else. Other days I'm extremely tired and exhausted. Can't even muster the energy to do anything. I also have burning heartburn along with nausea daily.
I still have all the other symptoms too.

Just have to wait and see.....
