When to go out with a baby

Hi! My baby is 12 days old now, and I’d really like to take him out for a day to visit my grandparents. But to get there, I have to take the bus and the train. How should I best handle this? He doesn’t have a routine yet—sometimes he needs feeding after 1.5 hours, other times after 3 hours, and then again after 4 hours. I’m worried he’ll start crying while we’re on the way at a time when I can’t feed him. How do you all manage that??

    Hi Marieke,

At the beginning, it's always a bit of a search with your little one, but I recently fed him/her kind of everywhere. Wear something easy to get on/off, and from your story I gather you're breastfeeding, where it's not immediately obvious that you're feeding your baby.

Oh okay, thanks for the tip. But what if he starts crying when I'm about to get off the train or something? Then I can't feed him. I'm always worried about things like that. Or that I won't find a good spot outside—it's too cold now, I think.

I’ve even breastfed while walking through a store haha. It felt like I was just strolling with my baby. But if your baby starts crying and you really need to get out in a few minutes, I’d let them cry a bit until you’re out and/or switched to a bottle. Once you can sit down, then I’d feed them. Bring an extra blanket to cover yourself and your baby against the cold and so no one can see. Practice makes perfect hihi, just go for it and let it happen.

I’d just go too, because I think you’d only have this problem when switching or getting off. Then yeah, just let him cry a bit until you find a quiet spot.
I’d definitely bring a blanket so that if you have to feed outside, you can keep the baby nicely covered and warm. You can also cover yourself up if you prefer. I actually think one of the big advantages of breastfeeding when you're out and about is that it's always available. I've also breastfed while walking a few times. (At some point, you become a pro at it.)
Please don't feel insecure about breastfeeding in public. It's just completely normal, although I do prefer to be a bit discreet, so don't sit around with bare breasts for too long.
I'd plan for enough time. So you're not rushing. That if he comes and you miss your connection, it's not a big deal. Then you'll be more relaxed, and that will make a difference.
