Giving birth at the hospital or at home

Hi ladies,
At the first visit to the midwife, I was asked whether I wanted to give birth at home or in the hospital, and I confidently said hospital.
Now, a few weeks later, I'm starting to doubt more and more....

What do you all do?

    hi liesx,
i don't have a choice here and have to give birth in the hospital. but if i had the choice, i'd also opt for a hospital birth.
i'm a stressed-out person and anxiety gets to me quickly at the thought that something might go wrong and i'm not in the hospital. but that's just my perspective.
i'd say go for what makes you feel comfortable. because ultimately, it's really important that you feel at ease

    Hi SiSi,
Thanks for your reply. What you're saying really resonates with me—I'm also quite a stress case, a control freak. And I'm also afraid that if something goes wrong, we won't be able to go to the hospital anymore.
At home, I feel more relaxed, but the thought of complications arising is quite daunting. I don't know if I'll even have a choice by then...
I'll think it over carefully once more.

I deliberately chose the hospital twice early in my pregnancy. In the end, though, both times I had a medical indication, so I didn't really have a choice anyway.

The first time, I chose the hospital because it felt like the safer option for a first birth. I liked having the possibility of pain relief, etc. Also, I had an extremely positive experience with the hospital where I gave birth. It has a really nice atmosphere, and since my partner works there, we're very familiar with it.

This time around, I chose the hospital again early on, partly because the first birth went so well there, and partly because I had a lot of complications with amniotic fluid and bleeding during my first delivery. I'd rather not deal with that at home.

Ultimately, you have to make the choice that feels right for YOU. Many hospitals also offer information sessions about giving birth in the hospital. You can go to those to get a feel for it.

You could also look into something like a maternity hotel or similar. I don't have any experience with that myself.

Personally, I find the hospital really nice. I gave birth to my two daughters there and I find it easy because they clean up for you and then you have that lovely feeling of coming home. But since my third princess, I've experienced that a home birth can also be very pleasant. I gave birth to our third girl unexpectedly at home. We had said we wanted to give birth in the hospital. But our girl decided otherwise Everything happened way too fast. I got contractions in the night and was eventually woken up by them. I woke my husband up, or rather he woke up himself haha. He had been waiting so long for when our girl would finally come, I was 1 week overdue. My mom and sister called and the midwife came together, it took about a quarter of an hour. She was born exactly at 4:55 am, our spring baby on March 24th. Just as we were about to leave for the hospital, I felt I wouldn't make it. At the front door, my water broke. And so it happened at home. Everything went super fast all of a sudden. We weren't prepared for a home birth but everything went well anyway. At home, they also cleaned up for me, made everything tidy again, my mom did that and my husband and sister. And my mom stayed for 3 weeks for the postpartum period so no maternity nurse. Looking back, I can now say that it was also very nice at home.
