Mother-in-law

Honestly, I don't get why you're so worked up about her. She prefers her daughter over you guys, which is fine for her. I'd just enjoy that for her if I were you. I'd simply ask nothing from her and expect nothing from her, let her run after her daughter. Be glad she's not your mother and just keep your distance. She's being unreasonable compared to how she treats her daughter, but I wouldn't pay any attention to her—it's a waste of your time. I think you just have to accept that she won't change and you definitely can't change her. You can only change yourself and how you deal with it. You're only making yourself crazy with thoughts about her and what she does. Unfortunately, she's just one of those mothers-in-law nobody wants.

Yeah, I know that, but it's not that easy, you know!!
It actually turned out like this since my sister-in-law had a baby. Before that, it wasn't like this.

If anyone should say something about it, it's your husband because his mother is sidelining his kids. That's not your place to say. I also think it would make more of an impression if he said it, since you're not his own mother. Otherwise, you'll probably be seen as that nagging daughter-in-law, which won't help you at all. So keep your mouth shut and let your husband handle it if you really want to say something. I wouldn't expect anything more from her myself—either she steps up or she doesn't.

Oh, what is it with in-laws it is indeed quite tricky! Especially because your husband can't stand it when you criticize his mother (is he a mama's boy?) My husband was like that but luckily it has improved a bit.
I also had to swallow a lot in the past (my in-laws and especially my father-in-law often belittled me, even when my husband was around! And with other people around, and then I felt so small and angry but it was brushed off as a "joke" that I should wisely keep my mouth shut.
Until one day I told my husband (after the umpteenth time) if you don't stand up for me, then I'll open my mouth but then there's a high chance of an argument. Because my bucket was full!
And lo and behold, he did! And since then, his parents have changed 99%! My husband sees that too and now realizes they weren't "jokes". And I now say everything in front of my in-laws whether they like it or not and the best part is that now they are the ones who wisely keep their mouths shut because they now realize my influence on their son is strong)
What I'm trying to say here is talk to your husband, and

If he doesn't take the first step to his mother for a conversation, then you do that.
Then he'll see that he has the choice to change the situation???? Your mother-in-law makes a difference and that's not good, especially not for your children.

Yeah, my husband already said this, and then it’s different for a bit, and then it starts all over again!!
My sister-in-law completely absorbs her mom, and my mother-in-law jumps in for her!!
And when we ask for something, it’s either too much or she can’t do it.
Our little boys don’t realize this yet, but our 8-year-old son does! And as a parent, that really hurts.
Is my husband a mama’s boy? Yes, he is, because he doesn’t dare say much to keep the peace. He says that for me, it doesn’t matter who gets favored!
And then he usually drags my mom into it too!!

Yeah, well, you know what it is... she is and remains his mother. What helps me is, well, acting a bit "pathetic" so not immediately being mean about his mom, but showing how sorry I feel about how things are going and stuff. Because indeed, if I say "your mom does this," he says "yeah, your mom does that." And honestly, you do defend your mom quickly, even if what that person says about your mom is true; you'll always downplay it. And it's her own fault if, later on, the kids don't want to go to her as much since she favors the others. My little boy just runs away from her now and runs to my mom instead, and my husband sees that too.

Just got back from visiting my sister-in-law's baby. I brought our two oldest boys with me. My mother-in-law comes in, gives sweet kisses to her daughter's kids and our boys have to stand up straight to give her a kiss! No loving look towards them. My heart bleeds to see this. Only the youngest one still goes to daycare but it's €28/day which is over €300 a month. She brings her daughter because she has to work 2 days and only has to pay €13. Oh yeah, because her mom goes babysitting once a week!! It's not about the money for me, it's about the principle. What you do for one, you should do for the other too. My sister-in-law's kids are also her princesses and prince, and ours she calls 'the boys and girl'. Yeah, I get really upset by how she acts! Now on Saturday is our youngest's first birthday party and the newly delivered sister-in-law has already let us know she's coming! Ah yeah, she naturally wants to be in the spotlight!! What she did when her sister gave birth in August too! She had herself admitted to the hospital because she had to throw up for a day. My mother-in-law had to watch her daughter so she couldn't go directly to her other daughter!! How awful is that? I try to not let it bother me too much but it's really weighing on me!!

Sorry, but reading your reply, I think it's time for you to take 10 steps back and try to look at the situation neutrally. You're already getting annoyed with your in-laws before they've even done anything. I can understand that given so much has happened in the past, you're quick to assume the worst, but to say right away that she's only doing it for attention... Ask yourself if she can even do anything right. I don't know what the underlying reason was for her being admitted to the hospital with one day of vomiting, but I'm currently seeing my gynecologist due to issues from my previous pregnancy and have strict instructions to come in immediately if I don't feel well. My baby's health comes first. And generally, they don't just admit you to the hospital. But with pregnancy, they do want you to come if you're not feeling right, even if it turns out to be nothing. I get that it's a relief to vent a bit, and there are real symptoms involved, but don't dwell on it; it won't get you anywhere.

Yeah, and then you have this! Her daughter has brought her grandchildren into the world; she carried them. You're not her daughter, but this doesn't sound very nice, but it's how it went for me too, the feeling isn't there...
  9. Mama met veel liefde #10

No, but I am married to her son! So whether it's her daughter's kids or her son's, isn't it the same? She was just kept under observation in the hospital. The doctors found nothing wrong, and everything was fine with the baby. When I become a grandmother, this is the last thing I'll do, and this is making a distinction between my son's kids and my daughter's. Even my own husband says he notices this too. But he doesn't want to say anything to avoid arguments!

I think you should keep a bit more distance from her. You're so irritated by her right now that she can't do anything right. I speak from experience; I've been there too. And as unfair as it may seem, she just has a preference for her daughters' kids. You can either keep stressing about it or try to let it go. Otherwise, you'll just end up arguing with your partner because as your irritation grows, sooner or later you'll explode at them. And she's the mother, so there's not much you can do about it anyway.
  11. Mama met veel liefde #12

Yeah mom, I know it’s not nice for my husband.
And I’d love nothing more than for us to sit nicely around the table!
But it’s not always simple when they always make it clear how they feel.
  12. Mama met veel liefde #13

She said the other day that I'm a burden!
I've been home since our 3rd child was 3 years old, a decision we made together because my husband is self-employed.
Then she accused me of living off my husband!!
My husband did step in though.
I can't just keep taking it lying down, can I?

Well, you know what I just do: I don’t go over there on my own, I don’t call her, I don’t ask her anything. And if she comes to visit us, I’ll make her a cup of tea and then go back to my own things. I’m polite and friendly for my husband’s sake. And believe me, my mother-in-law was looking for another woman for my husband while we’d already been married for years (we just hadn’t had a big wedding yet) and made it clear that when I was pregnant, she wasn’t happy about it because she’d promised the whole town we’d have a wedding and, in her eyes, we weren’t even married yet. She’s talked so much about me that I’d rather lose her than gain anything from her. Well, she is and remains my husband’s mother, so I behave myself properly. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get you anywhere, and if she does something unpleasant that your husband knows about, let him sort it out nicely.
  14. Mama met veel liefde #15

Yes, when she comes I’ll be friendly too!
But I feel like I can’t be myself. Maybe I should talk to someone who can remain neutral to help me process all this.
Because I don’t want this to come between me and my husband.

I guess I believe that too, but what I mean is, just live your own life with your family. Keep her at a distance, don't ask her anything. Do you happen to have your own family nearby?
  16. Mama met veel liefde #17

No, my sisters live in another province. I do have friends, but I don't want to always be a nag.
