Trying...? Or maybe not yet

Hi everyone,
My partner and I really, really want a baby. Emotionally, we're totally ready for it. The only big but right now: I don't have a job (though I'm very busy applying), and my partner works for minimum wage. We also have a pretty small apartment (but there is an extra room that would be suitable as a nursery). So friends and family advise us against trying to get pregnant right now. Rationally, I get it; the situation isn't ideal at the moment. But emotionally, it's really hard. I know we can give the baby all the love, and financially it'll be tough but not impossible. And with how things are now, I wonder if the financial situation will ever be ideal anyway.
Has anyone here had experiences, positive or negative, that might help us with our decision?
Best, Elisa

Phewww, the people I know use enough money to throw their baby into daycare from 4 or 5 days old because otherwise you don't have time to earn enough money.

You're home, you have time. I think there's no more suitable moment.

    Hi Elisa.

You might not find much value in my reply, but it’s your decision, and even if it’s a tough one, you have to make it, whether others agree with it or not. I can imagine you’re doubting. Some people would wait in your situation, while others would go ahead. Everyone is different and has their own reasoning for doing it or not. It’s difficult, but it remains your choice!

    @Elisa,

I agree with both Yvonne and Aradia... What I can advise you is to listen to your gut feeling... What does your gut say.. Is this a good time or not?
Is it feasible financially? (Money isn't the most important thing but it's very handy to have..)
In the 20s there was also a crisis and as far as I know, a lot of babies were born then too.. Seems like you should also look at your age, is this an age where you should think yes I'm at this age now and if I wait any longer it becomes a risk..
List all the pros and cons and discuss it with each other..

You need each other to make decisions like this.. We are all different and have different opinions..
Whatever you decide.. hopefully you figure it out.. Seems like it to me..
If you get pregnant and go for it, let me know how you're doing..

    Love, Ju

What Ju says, I agree with too.

Think about the future too: you both absolutely need to agree that if you really get into financial trouble, no one will point fingers at you saying: "Well, YOU got pregnant!"
(And believe me, even if your husband is super supportive, they have hormones too!!)

On the other hand, I'm in the same position: I'm at home and my husband doesn't have a steady job right now, he does odd jobs here and there.

Some months there's a bit of extra money, other months it's barely enough for rent and groceries!

But we have a roof over our heads, I'm never naked (unless I want to be, haha!!), and there's always something to eat in the fridge!!

My mom used to panic at every unexpected bill, sometimes even to the point of crying..
but eh...we never really "lacked" anything!!
We're still alive, right? And we're happy!!

It's a tough decision and it's entirely up to you!!
It'll work out either way, whether you go for it now or wait another year or so..

Thanks everyone for your replies. My partner and I agree that we really want a baby, that the circumstances aren't ideal right now, but we also wonder if they'll ever really become ideal. It's financially doable, but we'll definitely have to tighten our belts.
I did just buy an ovulation test with my partner, so we're taking at least one step forward (but not doing anything with it yet until we've really decided).

    @Elisa,
Good that you're making a decision together when the time comes..
Let me know if you end up being pregnant after all.
    Good luck with practicing..:-)

    Hi there,

I don't have kids myself, but I can only say that if you're both in a good financial position (maybe you have some union benefit or something), then maybe you should go for it!

A relative of mine was in the same boat; she got pregnant unexpectedly but decided to keep the baby. She told me that it's incredibly hard to live on just one salary and unemployment benefits with a baby. She realized this later on, because now she has a job and knows how tough it is to raise a child on minimum wage. It's so expensive to have a little one!

We both have jobs, so we won't be in that situation anytime soon. xxx

    Hey girl.
First off, I'd say 'follow your heart'!

My boyfriend and I have been together for 4 years this year.. from the start I wanted a baby, I wanted to be a young mom. Everyone told us to wait until you have a permanent job and have some security. My boyfriend had a permanent job at that time. In January this year he was fired for economic reasons, no more permanent contract, no more wish! But my boyfriend and I decided to go for it anyway. In February we stopped the pill and now I'm almost 15 weeks pregnant! In July I lost my job and have been home ever since. Despite everything, I'm really super happy and my boyfriend is too! He also always said he wanted stability first but saw how things went for him. Nobody has stability these days anymore. The only thing I would say is make sure you both support this.
I would just do it. I know myself what it's like to have to wait and that's really not nice to just say... A lot can still happen between here and there before you're pregnant. Just enjoy it!

    Good luck with your choice
