Delaying pregnancy because my sister is pregnant with a disabled baby?

This week I found out that my sister, who's pregnant with her first baby, is carrying a severely disabled child that most likely won't survive. SHE is halfway through. We actually wanted to try for our third child this month. Now I want to postpone that. But for how long? There's a two-year gap between my first and second, and we'd like to keep that for the third too. That means we should start now. I find this really tough.

Those are tough decisions, but you should keep in mind that you never know if or how long it might take to get pregnant again yourself. Just because you've had two kids doesn't mean a third is guaranteed. Plus, the older you get, the higher the chance you might carry a baby with a disorder.

I understand you want to consider your sister's feelings because of her sad news. You could wait until her baby is born. I don't know what they saw on the ultrasound and in the tests, but sometimes, if you're lucky, it turns out okay. They can see and estimate a lot, but you only know for sure once the baby is born. Anyway, lots of strength for you, your sister, and your family.

Regarding your own desire for children, it's your life and your choice, no matter what. Your sister should ultimately understand that too. Sometimes life isn't fair. This sounds harsh, but that's not what I mean.
