Hi!

I have a quick question. I'm currently 38+5 weeks pregnant. Because I've been having high blood pressure, they suggested we induce labor on Monday. At first, I was quite relieved because I could finally be done with a pregnancy full of ailments.
On the internet, you read both good and bad experiences.
My question is, what would you do? Or have you experienced this yourself and how did you feel about it?

Hi! With high blood pressure and your pregnancy term, I wouldn't wait any longer and would induce labor. I'd look not only at the pros and cons of induction but mainly at the risks if you keep waiting. That could save you and your baby from a lot of dangers. Good luck with your decision.

    hi sas
it would indeed be better but when i read that the little one gets a measuring device pressed onto their head, i still find it quite a scary idea

    Hi Miranda,

I'm being induced on Tuesday due to chronic high blood pressure; I'm on medication for that. I had my first daughter induced too. You mean the thread that's attached to the baby's head... You didn't notice anything, and our daughter only had a tiny little scab on her head the next day.

Are you being induced with a balloon or gel? Have you already had ripening or dilation? I had a balloon the first time because the baby was small (2.5 kg). Gel can cause a lot of strong contractions.

I'm now 38 weeks, and my cervix is ripened and 1 cm dilated.

And yes, waiting can be dangerous for you and your baby. I let everything happen naturally, but I was well informed about what they were going to do, and I found the induction quite pleasant.

    Hi Nancy,
    Thanks for your reply.
My cervix has softened, and I already have 2 cm dilation. They want to break my waters first, and then possibly use an IV with oxytocin or a gel—I'll hear more about that on Monday.
So, did you find it pleasant? For us, it's also the tension that it's really going to happen now, I think. Maybe that's also causing some doubt.
  5. Nancy Guest #6

Yeah, I did find it pleasant, but of course I can't compare it to a natural birth. After my waters broke, I also got oxytocin. I had a contraction storm too, but once I was fully dilated, after pushing six times, our daughter came out without any tearing or episiotomy.

The contractions were sometimes a bit hard to cope with, but it was manageable.

And honestly, I don't see any issue with inducing labor for our second daughter.

As I said, try not to overthink it and just let it happen—that's the calmest way to approach your birth.

    I agree with Sas.
If they have to pull the baby out through my nostril, so be it.
The downsides of induction don’t outweigh the dangers of high blood pressure (for me).

I don’t have any experience with this myself, I had a spontaneous birth.. And about that little thread they “poke” on babies’ heads; that’s so harmless it hardly poses any risks.

Hopefully you’ll have a healthy baby in your arms on Monday! Enjoy the last days of pregnancy

I was induced twice, for both births.
That thread means nothing, really, no scabs with my kids or anything.
With baby 1, nothing was torn either, and with baby 2, I just had two small stitches.
It was a huge relief both times.
And what the ladies say, health is number 1!!!!
    Good luck!

    Greetings from Ria.

    Hi ladies,
I've talked it over with my husband and we've agreed that if it's really necessary, we'll go ahead and have it induced.
I'm still quietly hoping that my blood pressure will be fine on Monday and that it won't be necessary, but we'll just have to wait and see.
    Thanks for your replies.
If things go well, I'll let you know how it turned out.
  9. My1987 #10

I was induced at 37 weeks due to pregnancy-induced hypertension.
It all turned out to be less of a big deal.
My cervix took a long time to dilate, and it was a long labor, but it wasn't as bad as I expected...
That little thing on the head doesn't matter much.
Because our little one had so much hair, it kept slipping off, so it had to be inserted a total of 4 times.

If they want to induce you on Monday, it will really be necessary for your health and that of your baby.

Wishing you lots of success and hopefully in a few days you'll be able to enjoy your little one.

    Hi ladies,
Had my check-up today, my blood pressure had gone up, but according to the midwife, the cervix wasn't ripe enough for induction yet... Sigh
Unfortunately, they're not going to proceed despite my complaints. I'll be back on Wednesday to have them assess again.
  12. kruimel #13

Do you have any other complaints? Headache, stabbing/pressure feeling around the top of your belly? As long as they keep monitoring your blood pressure, they'll definitely know what to do. As soon as you have symptoms, call them right away and demand further investigation..!

I had my blood pressure checked every 2 days at the end + urine test, my blood pressure was always on the edge but without other complaints and clean urine they did nothing.
In the end, I just gave birth spontaneously and my blood pressure was normal right after delivery.

    Hi,
I feel really nauseous all the time, no appetite to eat.
I keep seeing stars and feel an incredibly heavy pressure, not so much in the upper belly though.
The blood and urine tests are always fine, but my blood pressure has gone quite high over the past week, which does worry me, but well...
  14. My1987 #15

That's weird that z doesn't do that yet.
With me, he also wasn't planning to come.
They inserted a balloon for me at 7:30 PM and the next morning at 7:30 AM I had 3 cm dilation. And at 12:30 PM my water broke. It took another 19 hours for the birth because the dilation wasn't progressing.
    I was 37 weeks pregnant.

Are you also holding onto fluids? Then it could still be signs of pregnancy poisoning.
  15. Miranda Guest #16

Hi, my blood pressure went from 120/70 to 145/95 in 1.5 weeks. Last Thursday they did an internal exam and the midwife said the cervix was already quite soft and had 1 to almost 2 cm dilation. Since this is our first baby, this was very favorable in case they wanted to induce labor early. Today they did another internal exam and according to the midwife, it was barely 1 cm dilation and the cervix was still very high up. To induce labor now would mean forcing it according to her, so I have to come back on Wednesday and go through all the exams again. I've been holding in fluid for about 2-3 weeks now and already have a completely numb feeling in my fingers on my right hand. According to her, it's better to wait a bit longer and not insert a balloon or anything else. What I'm wondering though, I lost quite a bit of blood and mucus after the exam. According to her, some bleeding could indeed occur, but could it be that she accidentally stripped something? The bleeding has stopped now but I do have some cramps.

The best thing is if nature can just take its course... and if you don't have protein in your urine besides high blood pressure and your blood values are good, there's no sign of pregnancy-induced hypertension yet. With my first, they let me walk until 40 weeks with high blood pressure, and then they decided the risk was getting too big. With my second, I had some protein in my urine from 33 weeks onward, and my blood values weren't quite okay either. I had to be checked every other day until 37 weeks, and then they induced labor. So I think they're watching you closely because your blood and urine tests are still good.

Let's hope your little one decides to come out soon on their own.

Sorry, I meant to reply under a different forum, but my babbling is acting really weird!
  19. Nancy Guest #20

If she stripped you, you definitely felt it

It's normal that you might have some bleeding after she checked you. Everything is very engorged with blood right now. You might also have some mucus discharge from your mucus plug that's blocking the cervix.

I have to go to the hospital tonight for a check-up. If I'm less than 3 cm dilated, they'll insert a balloon; otherwise, my waters will be broken tomorrow morning.
