Hi everyone,

I’m a 19-year-old girl. I have a really sweet boyfriend of 3 years, and last Tuesday we found out I’m pregnant! Totally unexpected, since I normally use the pill. My doctor referred me to a midwife for an ultrasound to see how far along I am. We went there yesterday, and I’m probably only 4 weeks pregnant. On the scan, they could only see a gestational sac. I have another appointment in 2 weeks for another scan, because then they’ll probably see more.

Now, there’s one thing that’s really worrying me. I used to smoke before I knew I was pregnant. Of course, I stopped immediately when I found out, and I haven’t touched a cigarette since.

But... I did smoke a joint now and then over the past few weeks. Mostly on weekends. I’m really stressing about this. I didn’t know I was pregnant, otherwise I definitely wouldn’t have done it.

I also don’t dare tell my doctor, because I’m afraid he’ll get angry about it.

But does this really have a huge impact on my pregnancy?

I’m so worried about this..

Hi girls, you sound like a sensible girl, and if you don't touch anything else now, it'll be fine! Don't worry and try to relax. I hope the next ultrasound shows a nice beating heart.

Hi there, don't worry too much about it. During implantation, there's an 'all or nothing' effect. If something were wrong with the embryo, your body would naturally reject it.

By the way, you should definitely be able to say this to your GP or midwife. They won't judge you for it. At most, they'll just make sure you know you really need to put that joint and cigarettes way out of sight now.

You can also ask them if there are any consequences to expect, and if so, what they are...

But again, I don't think you need to worry about anything.

Have you recovered a bit from the surprise in the meantime? Hopefully, you'll be able to enjoy it soon and in two weeks, you'll see a beautiful little heart beating!

Don't worry about it at all; it sounds exactly like my story, and I have a healthy teenager who started VWO last year ;-)
I only quit alcohol/cigarettes/joints on the day I tested positive. ;-)
