They say Cheyenne wrong

Hi everyone..

I'm struggling with something.

Our almost 3-year-old daughter is named Chayenne. We pronounce her name the Dutch way: "shuyenne," but a lot of people say it wrong—like "shayenne" or similar—and they also often say it the English way: "she-ayenne." That's actually the most common pronunciation. She even says her name is "she-ayenne" because her teacher says it that way. When I tell her, "No, your name is 'shuyenne,'" she replies, "No, it's 'she-ayenne.'" I'm torn about whether to just let her call herself that or go with "Chayenne." I'm even a bit sad about it. I don't want her to have trouble with it later on.

Oh, that’s such a shame when things don’t go as you’d planned. Honestly, I can totally understand the confusion about how to pronounce it. But I do think it’s really unfortunate that the teacher keeps saying it wrong and now your daughter is saying it wrong too.

Maybe you should just let it go a bit at this age? Correct her occasionally, and I think when she’s a bit older she’ll naturally say her name the way you intended. And if not... well, if not... as long as she’s happy with it, right?

Don’t get sad about it though; she won’t really be bothered by it. It’s and remains a beautiful name!
