Warning nose spray!

Hi everyone..

I want to give you all a heads-up.

I currently have a really bad cold. On Friday, I used my son's nasal spray, the one for ages 2 to 6.

Turns out, it gave me hard contractions, a tight band-like feeling around my belly, and practice contractions! I stopped using it yesterday and already felt a difference. I wondered what could be causing it, so I went googling, and sure enough, it seems xylometazoline can cause contractions! The leaflet says pregnant women can safely use it for a week. So that's what I assumed. Trash it it goes!

It's common knowledge that pregnant women aren't allowed to use nasal spray, but saline rinses are fine.
Too bad you had to find out the hard way...

Wasn't aware of that, you hear everywhere to read the manual before use... that's what I do. Indeed, it's a pity that I had to find out the hard way. Don't understand why the manual isn't correct then...

    Actually, yes!
That's how it is with multiple remedies, unfortunately.
Hope you have a pleasant pregnancy and that your cold goes away soon!

I'll just stick with steaming.. it made me feel really unsure. Thank you!

I read elsewhere that there are midwives who also prescribe this. How weird is that! I also don't know any better than that this shouldn't be allowed.

I also had a nasal spray from the midwife... used it for 3 days and it's getting better now, hopefully it's not harmful then????

weird, right, whenie.. i don't understand any of it either anymore

Crazy, right! I’ve used this saltwater spray occasionally this week. The pharmacist said I could use it, and the leaflet didn’t mention anything about pregnancy... I only used it at night, and those nights I’ve had no issues with it at all.

So special, indeed, those double stories are always...

I’m startled by this message. I’ve been using it for a few weeks (a bad cold with sinusitis) on my GP’s recommendation. He said I could just keep using it. I’m 30 weeks pregnant... but trying to wean off it. I’m just scared that then I won’t be able to sleep at all at night!

mama v, you can use xylometazoline for max 7 days anyway, even if you're not pregnant.
Call your midwife or OB-GYN tomorrow if needed.
    Good luck

No worries, I asked the pharmacy about it a while ago. They have a book for that. You can safely use nasal spray, but not for longer than 5 days. If you want to use medication, always check with your pharmacist first!

And I only used it for 2 days. So I didn't even reach 5 or 7 days! If your gut says: don't do it, then don't do it. Then you'll just get that annoying cold, anything is better than a prematurely born baby..

So true, Suzanne! You're absolutely right!
