Number of kids, do you and your partner agree?

Hi

I gave birth to a big boy about a good six months ago.
Thanks to my partner, I’m also a plus-mama to our oldest son.
He always had the firm idea that there would only be one child.
The fact that our second son is here is therefore fantastic, of course.

But I have a bigger desire for children.
We talked about this early on in our relationship, of course.
And he was very clear about it. But my heart says something else.
I can’t get past the fact that there wouldn’t be any more children and I don’t know what to do with that.
We’ve talked about it a lot here, argued, shed tears.
Eventually, I was scared to talk about it myself because it made me so sad.
I’ve consciously put this aside for the last year so I could fully enjoy my pregnancy and those first moments with our second son.

Right now, we’re at the point where we’ve agreed to tell each other (in certain situations) why another child would or wouldn’t happen. That’s huge progress.
This works both ways. I also honestly admit when I don’t see it happening. And he honestly says when it is an option for him.

I don’t know where this will lead.
I’m just afraid that if there’s a final no, I’ll be left with a huge void.
I don’t want to force him, and he shouldn’t force me.
But if we don’t cut the knot, I’ll probably end up on the painful side of things.

Are there others who are in or were in such a situation and managed to get through it (yes or no)?
Do you have a much stronger desire for children than your partner, or vice versa?
Let me know.
I’d love to hear other people’s stories to maybe gain more insight myself.
And to be able to cope better with a final yes or no.

Greetings

Mammie-L

It's a tough situation when you can't agree on things.
My husband and I have always been clear about our wishes.
I wanted lots of kids and my husband only wanted 1.
Now we've decided that 2 kids is feasible financially and feels right for us.
If my husband eventually says he doesn't want any more kids after this one, I'll accept that, no matter how big the desire for a 2nd child is.
We came together when we both had no kids and fell in love immediately, so why would I leave him to find someone else who does want a child if he doesn't want a 2nd?
I find the love between my husband and me strong enough even without a huge brood of kids hihi

But that's my opinion and feeling.
I can also really relate to women who value the desire for children more than the relationship.
I hope you figure it out together
And I wish you all the happiness in the world with your son and your stepson

    X

@Jessie95: I’m not talking about leaving him at all, okay? I don’t know if that was clear.
Our family wouldn’t be complete without my partner. The option of him not being in my/our life is not something I can consider.
The kids are there with him, not with someone else.
I don’t just want another baby. I could have a child with anyone, basically .
The “problem” is that I want this family with him.

Only, if a third child doesn’t come, it means I’d be left with a “hole” in my heart.
Because that child, even if they’re not here, is already in my heart.
And I don’t know how I’d deal with that.
    We’re not there yet, though.

    Thanks anyway for your message

    Greetings

Same here . We're four at my place. And I've always found that lovely.
Even if it was arguing .
My partner is an only child. He's already explained a lot why he originally only wanted one.

I get the impression that it's also been "discussed" at your place, like with us, but that someone (you, then) has a big heart .
That's how I explain it to myself. Which doesn't mean that your partner, or anyone else who doesn't want/not many children, doesn't have that. But it's kind of my feeling. My heart is big enough for all those kids and no one will come up short.

It's hard to align, because you're dealing with a feeling and yes, how do you convey that, let the other person feel it too.
I always say, "if I had been born 100 years ago, I'd probably have had 10" .

Having the option gives a nice feeling. I've told my partner that too.
I don't need to hear "yes", but I do want to know that we're giving it a chance together.
    Just to think about it.

We'll see where we stand in a certain amount of time

We’re happy with just 1 for now—that’s already quite a lot! It’s great that everything has gone well for the whole 9 months. If another one comes along much later, that would be very welcome, but we don’t need a whole bunch. My husband is an only child, and I was too until I was 16, when my little brother and sister were born. I think that even though you really want to do everything with the same partner, it can still weigh heavily on you if your partner isn’t fully on board. If you keep bringing up this topic in sadness, it’ll be hard to deal with.

I completely understand the pain and that empty feeling. After our first, my husband said that was it. I always wanted two kids, but suddenly the limit of one was set. This caused me a lot of pain and it was hard to accept. No matter how you look at it, it puts a strain on your relationship. Now, after three years, my husband suddenly wants a second! It still feels so unreal. I have to get used to the idea all over again. I feel like there's too much time between them, but I shouldn't complain since I'm allowed to go for wish number 2!

Apparently, a decision isn't always final. The only advice I can give you is to focus on the nice, easy things about having two and find happiness in that. And once the baby is here, evaluate your choice from time to time. Watch baby videos and look at photos together, then subtly point out the nice things about a little one. But always hold on to the happiness of what you have.

    @Alrin, thank you.
I read your reply a few days ago and it really came through (in a very good way).
I mustn't forget to enjoy all the rest that I do have. Because that could easily slip by.
And I really don't want that.
You made me realize that I'm enjoying every moment so much. I was already doing that when only my stepson was here.
I did that consciously during my pregnancy. And I need to keep doing it.
    So thank you

My boyfriend didn't want kids. In the end, I got to have one. (Now dad's best friend). We always argued about having a second one, which made me really unhappy. I eventually wrote him a letter (so he couldn't interrupt me) with my feelings in it, and now he allows me to have a second child.
I work full-time and sometimes find doing the housework alongside that quite a challenge. He said I need to make sure I keep everything organized from now on... It wasn't that he really didn't want a second child, but he just wants to be sure we can handle it!

We always wanted a big family (4 kids) from the start, if it’s meant to be for us. We have 3 now and are working on number 4. Lovely.

Meanwhile, 1.5 years later and 3 months ago I was asked to go for one more :-D.
    I couldn't believe my ears.
You never know how things can turn out. :-)

Enjoy what you do have, and not what isn't applicable yet
As long as you keep talking about it while the other partner isn't seeing it yet, that can also absolutely create aversion to even thinking about having a baby.

So don't push. Not every big family is necessarily cozy by definition.

Anonymous, my post wasn't about that at all... If you had read my previous messages from a year ago, you'd see that I simply decided to enjoy everything and wait. And now he has made the decision. I didn't force him.

When we first got together, we didn't really want kids. Now, five years later, we unexpectedly had a son together, and I think it's amazing! When he was four weeks old, I already knew, I really want one more! My boyfriend found it hard, but I gave him lots of arguments. I'm an only child and don't want that for my son... In the end, he understood and agreed with me in some ways. My son is now five months old, and we're now trying for a second round! Can't wait to have another little one!

A lot has changed over the years here. As a young girl (not that I'm old now, of course), I dreamed of having a family with 4 or 6 kids. I come from a family of 3 children, and my husband is one of 2.

After the birth of our daughter, we faced quite a few setbacks, both during the pregnancy and afterwards. She was born with severe hip dysplasia (read: almost dislocated) on both sides and went through a heavy treatment journey until we were told a week before her first birthday that everything was okay. Our last check-up in June confirmed this; she's turning 5 at the end of November. Our decision was made: we were happy to keep our daughter.

Shortly after her second birthday, the urge for a second child started to tickle me. A few months later, I had my Mirena removed, and after 6 months, I got a positive test. Our son is now 17 months old, and even after his birth, we were absolutely sure we'd keep going.

This time, the urge started much faster, especially for me. After a few conversations and lots of weighing the pros and cons, we're both certain that number 3 is coming, and sooner rather than later. So we're busy preparing for another little miracle.

Good luck to all the ladies who also want to get pregnant again.
