I found out a couple of weeks ago that I'm pregnant, so I'm already 2 months along. I'm 20 and doing adult education combined with a full-time job, and my boyfriend is 25 and going to university. Even though he's very happy about the news that we're expecting, he only wants to work during holidays to earn some extra money for the next 3 years! Because he just started his studies this year. I'll definitely have to put my studies on hold for a few years to take care of our child + earn money. I've talked about this a lot with my boyfriend, but he thinks it's normal while I actually find it quite selfish and lazy of him. We have a good relationship, but I don't know if I should fully support his studies or point out to him that he should look for a job too? Opinions?
I’d suggest taking stock of how much income you can get in these situations: student finance, child-related budget, allowances, etc. Working isn’t always beneficial. And a diploma is also very important (after 30, I think you have to pay for everything yourself). I’m currently at home because I can’t get a job with my education assistant certificate and I’m too old for retail. Look for help from someone who knows all the rules and can help you make a balance sheet. And a weekend job should definitely be doable, right? An accelerated training program, living and surviving as cheaply as possible are all options to consider.
I totally get that your boyfriend wants to finish his studies. As already mentioned, that's really important for a good future. On the other hand, it's a bit less fair that you have to put your studies on hold now, but that's just the sacrifice of your pregnancy. I completely understand that you find it annoying that you have to be a full-time mom right now, put your studies on hold, and go to work to support your child. It would be nice if your boyfriend could also help a bit with the costs by taking up a part-time weekend job, as mentioned above. Keep in mind that 3 years can pass quickly, and if your boyfriend has his diploma by then, you'll both be in a better position... maybe he can then move up to a well-paid job, making things easier for you both. And maybe you can do a distance study or, as also mentioned, a accelerated study in the meantime. Definitely don't expect your boyfriend to drop out of his studies, because we all know that having a diploma gives you better future opportunities. You know what you're getting into when you choose to have a child, and yes, you just have to give up some things... I'm also expecting my second child now, I don't have a diploma yet, and I really want to finish my studies for my future, but as a full-time mom and with another baby coming, I unfortunately have to put it on hold. I tried a distance study, but it was too difficult for me in terms of time and rest with a toddler at home... Now I want to follow a hairdressing course to at least have a diploma, but for that you have to be present at the hairdressing school since it's a practical subject, and I can't manage that right now with a baby on the way. My boyfriend is working now, we don't live together. I'm on unemployment benefits. But I really want to earn my own money and be independent. Now I'm waiting until my first child starts primary school and my second child can go to daycare funded by the municipality, so I'll have time to follow a course and then earn my own money with a diploma. Yes, it's not ideal at the moment... but if you start having kids without a diploma or a good job, this is what you get. You just have to put your own things on hold or find ways to combine them. I hope you manage to combine your studies with motherhood and that your boyfriend can support you with a weekend job or something. Maybe you can also get an additional allowance, definitely child benefit as extra support. Enjoy your pregnancy and good luck!
