I think Sindre is a beautiful name!
Personally, I find Winter a bit strange, but if you both think it's lovely, I'd just go for it.

There are plenty of girls named May who weren't born in May.. If you think it's beautiful, just go for it! I personally think Sindre is much prettier!

I really don't like Winter, not in June but also not in December.

I think Sindre is much nicer!

Of all the names mentioned here, I think Sverre is the most beautiful.

Thanks for the replies! I don't think we should go with Winter (or a variant) literally
    I really like Wintre/Wyntre as a suggestion!!
It remains a dilemma: Do you pick a really beautiful first name (Sindre) that isn't used as a namesake (then use it as the 2nd or 3rd name) or name after someone in the first name but it's not your absolute top choice for the prettiest name.

With the girl's name, we did manage to name after someone in the first name, even after two women (my mom and her mom, because I happened to give birth on her 80th birthday). My mom is Annita, my grandma (her mom) is Janny (or actually Jantje). So we turned Annita into Anna/Anne (the original name) and Jantje became Jente. That gives you Anne-Jenthe. But we think a double first name is too long and are afraid only the first name will be used, so it would then become Ayenthe.

It just strikes us that there are a lot of names with a W that can also start with another letter, and then suddenly (as far as we're concerned) they look much nicer. We just don't find that W beautiful for some reason. For example, Wybrand and Sybrand, Wynand and Dynand, Wismar and Ismar, Wycho and Tycho, Wiebren and Siebren, Wilmar and Silmar... etc.

And we've also been thinking about Norwin/Norwyn... but it doesn't sound quite right with the last name (which also starts with a W and has 3 syllables).

    It's tricky, huh..

Janine, it has to be a name that he/she can also use later when applying for jobs.
But a friend of mine is called Catharina (after her grandma, of course), and uses Carin as a nickname.

    You could do that too.

A girl I know from my circle is named Eloise, but her official nickname is Loïs.

You should do what feels best for you.

Personally, I don't quite like winter, and I think a variant you have here is definitely nicer! My kids are also named after someone. I just gave them their own first name and a clear middle name as a tribute!

Sorry, I don’t think Winter (or a variant of it) is beautiful. Sindre, on the other hand, I do like. Naming him in the 2nd or 3rd name seems fine to me too, right?
Good luck finding the right name! :-)

I'd go with Sindre. Winter isn't just a season, it's also a last name. That's why I don't think it works as a first name.

Thank you all! We've made up our minds.
We're going with Sindre as the first name and will use it for the 2nd and 3rd names. We think it's a super beautiful first name (it's a shame not to go for it), and none of the names with a W feel quite beautiful enough. For the 2nd name, I think William is actually fine. The 3rd name will be something with Dédrick (after my father, who goes by Dick/Dirk). Diederik is already all over the family, so that's not an option.

    Didier maybe?

    Lovely that you're choosing Sindre!

    Sindre... Really beautiful and unique!
I can see why you both like Winter, I think it's beautiful too...but indeed (for reasons like ii mentioned) I wouldn't choose it...

    That's great that you're out!
Sindre is such a beautiful name! I hadn't heard it anywhere either, so it's super unique too

And just the third name Dirk? Pretty straightforward.

I have a son named Winter, turning 12 in October, and I'm so happy with this name! Too bad you didn't go with Winter.
