Unclear ultrasound explanation

Hi everyone,

I’ve known I’m pregnant for three weeks now and had my first ultrasound yesterday. After the intake with the midwife, I thought I was between 8-10 weeks pregnant this week. But during the ultrasound yesterday, I was told I’m 5-6 weeks. I find that quite strange because that would mean I had a positive test after being 2-3 weeks pregnant. There was also clearly a beating heart visible on the internal scan. The baby could even be seen on the external scan, but it was so small that they opted for an internal scan.

Now she told me I’m 5-6 weeks based on size. She didn’t take anything else into account. Not the baby’s development, the beating heart, or my last period. I find it all quite weird and was wondering if anyone could advise me. I’m planning to get a second opinion. She wanted me to come back in two weeks, but I don’t have much confidence in that anymore.

But with an early ultrasound, they normally see the little heart beating, right?

They look at the first scan to see how far along you are and if there are any special details, like twins or triplets.

Then you'll have the anomaly scan a few weeks later. By then, the baby is already a real little human, and based on that, you get the definitive due date.

I had that scan at 10 weeks and 4 days.
My first scan was at 7 weeks and 3 days, with a clearly beating heart. The calculated due date was only 3 days different, set for March 19th.

It's totally normal that they estimate the pregnancy duration based on the baby's length at the first ultrasound. Based on my cycle, I thought I was 8 weeks along at my first scan, but after measuring, it turned out to be 7 weeks. I had to adjust my expectations a bit, but I've since had the dating scan, and I'm only two days earlier than what the first scan suggested, so it was pretty close anyway.

The first scan is indeed mainly to check if there's a heartbeat, whether there's one baby or more, and if the implantation is in the right place. I'd just wait for the dating scan (although I found it quite annoying at first to be a week less along than I thought.....)
