Oh yeah, from Wikipedia to even HERE on the Brabbel site itself, where you can also find the meaning of names, it says that it means "Ruler of the Elves."

Masha, I actually go to England quite often. The big castles there often have a garden with a large aviary, which is how I know that. If you type the name into Google and ask for images, you also get some really nice aviaries. "Vogel" is "Avis" in Latin, and that's where Avery is derived from.

Elfenkoning is new to me though

Nice that you come to England sometimes.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I want to name my daughter after my mother. Her name was Evelina and she was also called Evi or Eef, as far as I remember.
I wanted to make it just a little bit different, hence Ave. When I see Ave written down, I read it in the English way (Eef). And I was wondering how others see it. And indeed, after telling people Masha once, they know it well.????
  5. ii Guest #25

I think the answer is that some people will get it, but a lot won’t.

Do you mean how to pronounce the name? Ii
  7. madelene #27

I think Chantal Eveline is really beautiful.
Never heard of it before. Very beautiful
    And feminine.
I would just go with that name.
  8. ii Guest #28

I expect that a lot of people won't get that you mean an English pronunciation, and will say Avee or Avuh, and your daughter will spend her whole life correcting people. And then she'll also get comments like: "Well, your parents should have chosen a different spelling."

By the way, I also think Eveline is a really beautiful name, as Madelene already wrote. Romantic. Maybe that's a good option too?

I think the negativity here about possibly mispronouncing the name is a bit overblown. And yeah, there are indeed several names that can be pronounced in different ways. Everyone around her will remember the name after saying it once, come on. And even if you have to explain your name once, it's not a math problem, haha. I think Ave is really nice! Much nicer than Eef or Evi or something! Ave looks much cooler and yet sweet! I think it's a really nice name, Chantal! Just go with your gut feeling!
  10. kaya Guest #30

And yeah, if I saw Ave somewhere I'd pronounce it in English too. People here say a lot of people wouldn't get it? Hahaha again, it's not algebra or anything. It's just a name that isn't even difficult or anything. Just explain it once, come on. I know so many foreign names that are actually difficult. The reactions here are really exaggerated. Hope you choose Ave!
  11. Miep #31

My first thought when saying it out loud was "Eef," so not everyone pronounced the e at the end.

    Girl, go with your gut.
If you and your husband think the name is beautiful, what does it matter what someone else thinks who you only know from a forum?

My daughter has a name that was given to only 6 girls in her birth year. Not because it's a weird name, but because the name would be considered "old-fashioned" and outdated.
And the name I'm considering for a boy also falls under names you don't hear much anymore.
But the most important thing: I think it's beautiful
  12. masha Guest #32

    Well said, Kaya and Miep!
  13. ii Guest #33

So if others express their genuine concern, does that suddenly become negative?
If Chantal were to choose Ave, she’d at least know what she’s choosing for, and what reactions she might face—both to her face and behind her back. Because those reactions will come. Better to be well-prepared.
  14. ii Guest #34

But I'm going to stop worrying about it
  15. Chantal started this #35

Thanks for your reply, Miep! I think there will indeed be more people who see it as Eef. And there will also be people who pronounce it differently. That's just how it is with more names. I think it's a beautiful name, and that's indeed the most important thing ????
  16. sierra Guest #36

Chantal, I think you should totally go with what feels right to you! The most important thing is indeed that you find a beautiful name! With many other names, you do have to explain them, right? What others think and feel doesn't matter, it's about you, hehe. Ave sounds cute. I think it's beautiful.

    thank you so much Sierra????

Are there any other people who would like to let us know what they read when they see Ave posted? I’d be really happy to hear from you.
  19. G Guest #39

It feels weird to me. Sorry, but it really says Aavuh, for me.
