gestational diabetes

Good afternoon.

I’ve got something on my mind that I’m quite worried about and stressing over. I just had a control scan; I’m now 27 weeks and 1 day pregnant with our first baby. The scan showed that the baby is growing quite fast and is already measuring at 28 weeks and 3 days. The sonographer mentioned it might be due to high sugar levels. Naturally, I went googling immediately and saw all sorts of things about injecting yourself, big babies, and diets. I have an appointment with the gynecologist on Friday to ask her, but I’m really worried about it. I haven’t been tested for sugar yet; I guess that’ll be on Friday since I’m going to see the gynecologist anyway. I’m really scared of having an extremely large and heavy baby, especially since I’m overweight myself and know what it’s like, and I’d really like to protect my child from that.

Are there any people here who have experience with gestational diabetes and maybe know what I can do about it? I never eat sweets or drink soda, and I eat very little at dinner. I do drink a lot of water and milk. Are there other dietary things I should watch out for? I eat a lot of fruit, and the sonographer said that might contain a lot of sugars, so maybe I should choose vegetables instead.

I don’t know... and I’m quite worried.

    hi
thanks for your reply, but I find it so hard to figure out what I can and can't eat, because he mentioned sugars in fruit and fruit juices, no soda, no candy, cookies, and anything with lots of sugar, potatoes have a lot of starch which apparently isn't good either, bread has a lot of it too,
I'll just wait until Friday, I was already tested for sugar early in this pregnancy and everything was fine then, baby was always 3 days behind in growth from the start,

I'm hoping for the best, but it's really nerve-wracking... you read so much........... (and yeah, you shouldn't google then) but well, you can't help but worry.. and you hope for a healthy baby.!

    Hi,

the advice is to eat regularly. I also had a baby weighing 5035 grams. I'm now 39 weeks pregnant, and they say he's only 3300 grams now. He'll probably be a bit heavier, but watch what you eat.

So eat very regularly, have a little something every hour. Don't eat three sandwiches at once, but spread it out.

And use as little sugar as possible. I managed to stick to it until week 30, after that I could just eat normally. I didn't get gestational diabetes, and even though you might have a big baby, it doesn't necessarily have to be because of sugar. But keeping an eye on it can't hurt, as you can see with me.

    Best,
    Corine

No problem, I can imagine you were startled and don't know what to think right now.

I do want to respond to that story about that guy because I'm bothered by so much ignorance. I could explain it all, but you've probably read too much already to believe anything else.

    Let me ask you this:
Have you ever known or seen someone in your life who became fat from fruit, potatoes, and bread? As long as you do this normally (so no liter of fruit juice, but a squeezed orange is really not bad, 2 brown breads with butter and some boiled potatoes), you're really not doing anything wrong

    Hi Corine,

I've been careful from the start because I'm also really afraid of gaining too much weight myself..... but you just want your baby to have a healthy weight, and if it ends up being too heavy due to gestational diabetes, I feel like I had that in my own hands... I think that's so awful, because I feel like I've been very careful not to eat too much and especially not eat unhealthy food..

    It's still exciting..!

No, indeed, but it's tough... yeah, indeed, that guy is all about the ultrasounds, so yeah, he said it to me like that, which makes you think...

    hey lined.
at 27 weeks they really diagnosed me with gestational diabetes. i was really not okay with it because i never thought i'd have something like that, since i never felt bad.
i'm quite tall myself, 1.76m, and i also have some extra weight, and they often say you get high sugar because of your overweight :s
what the man says about fruit sugars is really not nonsense. especially if you do end up having gestational diabetes. then you can't eat certain types of fruit or only a very small amount. you also can't eat too many carbs in a row because they get converted into glucose (blood sugar). so i can only eat 3 slices of whole grain bread in the morning and afternoon, and 3 potatoes as big as an egg in the evening. my snacks are a bowl of low-fat yogurt or an orange, and especially lots of water or light drinks. if i want to eat a banana, i can only eat half of it. and if i want to eat grapes, i can only have 15 of them. it's definitely not meant that you lose a lot of weight during this period, but rather that you get controlled nutrition for your baby. (and for yourself of course) but it doesn't always mean you'll end up having a super big baby at birth. it often happens that they end up smaller and lighter than the gynecologist's machine had calculated.
just want to say that these rules only apply if you really have gestational diabetes ;o)

    greetings liena

    hey lined.
i think you were supposed to come in for a check-up today.
do you already know if you have gestational diabetes or do you still have to wait for the results?
i hope it’s not the case because it’s pretty miserable all around.
    let us know, okay?
    greetings, liena

Yes, how are you doing now? Hopefully a good result?

    Hi hi,

No, today I only had a check-up with the OB-GYN. Everything was fine, the little one is growing well, and luckily I haven't gained a single gram . My blood pressure was also good, 120/70.

I have to do the sugar test on Monday... I have an appointment scheduled, so I'm really curious...

And I'll definitely keep you posted.

    hey lined
glad to hear everything's going well. your blood pressure is indeed on the good side too. with me it always fluctuates between 12 and 13 over 7. that's actually pretty good too. I had my check-up with the gynecologist last Wednesday. Everything looked good too, luckily. I had a check-up with the midwife for pregnancy-induced hypertension and luckily I didn't have it. I had lost 1 kilo though, which she found quite strange. But well, what do you expect when you have to watch all carbs and sugars. I'll drop by here again next week. I'm curious

    Hi hi,

just went for a prick test this morning, but well, they don’t tell you much. My fasting values were 5.7, and after the drink and waiting 2 hours, it was 7.2.... Now waiting for next Tuesday’s check-up with the gynecologist, then I’ll hear how things are moving forward.

    Hi hi,

Just went for a test this morning, but well, they don’t tell you much, right? My fasting levels were 5.7, and after the drink and waiting 2 hours, it was 7.2.... Now I’ll wait until next Tuesday for a check-up with the gynecologist, then I’ll find out how things are moving forward.

    Nice values, huh!
    Good luck with the wait!
  16. liena #17

oh that sounds unpleasant. that drink is also so gross, bah bah.
when I had to go back for a second extended sugar test, they lost my blood sample. As a result, I had to go back again for another dose of sugar hahaha
I wasn’t happy about it at all, but well. I don’t know how things work in the Netherlands, but in Belgium they give completely different measurements.
Did they say anything about making an appointment with a diabetologist or whatever they’re called in the Netherlands? I think if they didn’t mention anything, you don’t need to worry and everything is fine.
    Greetings, Liena

    hey lined.
    how are you?
did you get your results or do you now have high sugar levels or not?
    I'm very curious

    Hi hi,

That's so nice of you to think of me and follow along:-)
No, I haven't heard anything else yet. I have another check-up with the gynecologist on Tuesday, so hopefully there will be more news then.
But I think it'll be okay. They say if you're under 8 it's good.. and I had 7.2 after the sugar test. But we'll wait and see what they say on Tuesday.

    Best, Linda

Yeah, I think it’s because I just feel it’s nice to talk about it with someone. I don’t think having high sugar levels is nothing either. It made me really insecure about what I could and couldn’t eat.

Now, meanwhile, I’ve gotten somewhat used to it, but I sometimes still sneak in something I really enjoy. But I think you’re doing well; otherwise, they would’ve scheduled an appointment for you to adjust your eating habits and monitor your levels

    Greetings, Liena
