We can't see the forest for the trees anymore.
We're just regular folks from a village in central Netherlands, with good jobs and a busy social life (for context).
What do you think of the following names?
We're looking for a
- timeless yet modern
- short, strong, yet feminine
Girl's name.

Preferably not an "ordinary" name and not too frilly.

__Loïs, Félien, Lizze, Suze, Jette, Floor, Cato__

What did you think of Febe, Lio, Liora.

Thanks, but it will be one of these names.
Which one do you think fits best?
  3. Livi #4

Loïs or Félien then, because you hear the others regularly. I prefer a name that doesn't come up that often.

I'm actually a preschool teacher, and you do hear those names pop up quite a bit outside. Especially Lizze, Floor, and Cato. It's often not easy either, because you might have two of them in your class, and then you have to tack on a nickname or something. Which I find sad for the child, because her name isn't really her name then, but like: Floor K and Floor S. Do you see what I mean?

But Jette and Suze are mainly Dutch names; you don't really hear them in Belgium. But I think they're quite common in the Netherlands. Well, I'm not sure about that, I'm from Belgium.

Cato looks nice. Lizze or maybe Liza.

Thanks! We'd love to hear your thoughts on our preferences and the associations we hope match the names mentioned. What we consider timeless yet modern, or tough yet feminine, might mean something different to others. So please feel free to answer the question. Thanks so much, keep it up!

Given your criteria, I'd go with Suze or Cato.

Floor is nice but not very practical in English.
Loïs and Félien are sweet but quite trendy right now.
Lizze and Jette are also nice.

It also depends on the last name, of course
  7. Anonymous Guest #8

I think Jette is really cool, feminine, and timeless! That fits your preferences and is also the cutest name on your list! Cato seems a bit more stubborn to me... Félien sounds a bit sweeter and softer...
Lizze, I think, is anything but cool and feminine...

Félien feels very cat-like to me (but maybe you're cat people)

Loïs: I always associate it with a femme fatale, although the name does sound cheerful.

Lizze: contemporary and a bit cheeky ;-) good choice.

    Jette: a strong name.

Suze: a beautiful name, but I can't get rid of Suze Mens from my mind these days

Floor: okay, but I'd rather see Floortje or Flore. It feels a bit like an abbreviation, but it's definitely of this time.

Cato: a smooth name for a strong personality.
  9. Linda #10

    Lizze!
  10. Anonymous Guest #11

I'd go for Jette because it sounds timeless yet a bit cheeky!
  11. Emme Guest #12

I'll go through the list quickly. Although I actually think all the names are quite nice and good!
Félien: beautiful, strong, and I just think the F is a lovely letter.
Loïs: also nice. But do you say Lois, Loo-is, or Lowis? That could lead to confusion for others.
Lizze: not so much, but it's a neat name. I think Lize is beautiful. But Lizze sounds like the place Lisse.
Jette: cheerful, headstrong, but I don't think it suits a 16-year-old so well.
    Suze: chic, cheerful, elegant
Floor: despite the English word for floor, and that it might be quite common, I still find this one so lovely! Tough, feminine, somewhat cute, and easy to shorten, but in a way that won't be unpleasant for the child.
Cato: headstrong, high "janjansendekinderengehalte", but despite that, both tough and sweet at the same time.

Maybe you'll find this useful, maybe not. You'll never choose wrong anyway; they're all fine names!
  12. madelene #13

Lois if you'd rather not go for something too fancy, as you mention.
Cato comes across to me as villagey.
Felin is sweet. Lizze is boring. Suze is cute.
Jette is a rich girl from good families.
Floor is fancy. That's how these names come across to me.
  13. Emily Guest #14

I'm also going through the list
Félien: Nice, sounds bold and strong.
    Loïs: Really nice, beautiful sound.
Lizze: Not quite my style, but not ugly.
Jette: Nice name, sounds sweet and chic.
Suze: Don't find it very nice, but a good name.
Floor: Don't find it beautiful, I know it as a surname, girl's name, boy's name, and abbreviation...
Cato: Sounds spicy, but don't find it a very nice name as the child gets older.
Good luck with choosing! I think it's a really tough choice
  14. Anonymous Guest #15

    Jette is very nice.
I find Flore nicer and more unique than Floor.
  15. Sarah started this #16

    Wow, thank you so much!
This confirms our suspicion. And it doesn't make the choice any easier because they're all lovely names haha!
  16. Anonymous Guest #17

Cato is stubborn, Félien feminine, sweet and strong, Lois is a strong woman and tomboy, Jette is hip, tough and timeless, Lizze is hip and tough, Suze is a little girlie, Floor is hip, timeless, strong and feminine.
  17. Moppie Guest #18

    Félien!
  18. lily #19

And what will it be? Have you decided?
  19. Sarah started this #20

Suze Cato and Loïs have been eliminated.
    Thanks to your help!
Now just need to choose from the remaining names
