real contractions?

Hi mamas and mamas-to-be!

I'm now 38+3 weeks pregnant and have had Braxton Hicks contractions since week 35. They weren't really painful, but they were quite annoying! Since last night, though, I've had contractions that are persisting and haven't gone away yet, whereas normally they'd fade after about an hour. I'm feeling tightenings at the bottom of my belly, and when those subside, I get a dull ache in my back. Between the pains, I have menstrual-like sensations that aren't really painful. Is this the right sign that labor is starting, or is it false alarm again?

Love, Daisy

I see no one has replied yet. I hope you've figured out by now whether it's real contractions and that they're progressing. If not, here's a tip: take a warm shower. The midwife told me that real contractions get more intense with heat, while practice contractions ease up.
Good luck and hoping for a smooth delivery for you!
