Forum 3rd trimester

I'd like to give birth in an open delivery room, but it's really expensive.

Hi everyone.
I just want to ask what you all think about this.
I’d really prefer to give birth in the open maternity ward, but I checked with my insurance to see how much it would cost me if there are no medical reasons. They told me that €312 would be charged to my own account on top of my deductible of €350. Should I give birth at home because of that? It just seems like such a lot of money.
What do you all do in this situation??

I’d love to hear your thoughts!!

Greetings

It's really sad that you only get your hospital birth covered for medical reasons. Unfortunately, many women therefore choose to have an epidural so they can get their birth covered, but this decision comes with so many risks! What you can do is start at home and go to the hospital if there's a (medical) reason (e.g., meconium in the water). But... if you feel more comfortable with a clinic birth, you should choose that regardless of the cost, in my opinion.

I completely agree with you, Iza. It's true about the deductible and co-payments. Otherwise, make sure to check with your midwife. She can definitely put your mind at ease about giving birth at home.

I'm afraid you're misinformed. Midwifery care and postpartum care costs are not subject to the mandatory deductible (€350). These costs are exempt from the mandatory deductible, just like your GP. However, you do have to pay a personal contribution of €312 for a non-medically indicated outpatient birth. And in certain supplementary insurance policies, you can get those personal contributions (€312 and €4 per hour for postpartum care) reimbursed.

The reason I don't want to give birth at home is because I've seen enough cases in postpartum care where the ambulance has to be called at the last minute or where the mother and baby have to go to the hospital. And it just gives me a better feeling to give birth on the open delivery wards. You seemed to have had the same experience with your first one, didn't you?

I now also have medical reasons to give birth on open delivery wards, so financially it's already sorted out!!

With me, it wasn't with an ambulance..
Never assume the worst.. Complications can always happen.
Just like a high-risk birth can also go smoothly
