Watching a lot of TV makes a child aggressive.

Lies
Kids who watch a lot of TV are more likely to have a criminal record and an aggressive personality later in life. A study in New Zealand shows a strong correlation between watching a lot of TV as a child and antisocial behavior as a young adult.

I've always thought something like that, but what do you all think now?

I read that this morning too, yes. Watching too much TV isn't good, but I think with this study (as is often the case with studies) you also need to look at environmental factors. Parents who let their kids watch a lot of aggressive TV often have little time for their children. As a result, kids learn less social behavior (because their parents don't have time for them), which in turn gives them a higher chance of developing an aggressive personality (to get attention that way). So yes, I definitely think there's a kernel of truth to it, and I'm sure kids nowadays spend too much time indoors watching TV.

Anyway, that's said; now off outside with the men

I agree with Iza, it also depends on environmental factors. My almost two-year-old daughter is only allowed to watch TV for a limited time, and always with mom or dad nearby. Precisely because we believe that TV isn't very pedagogically responsible We pay close attention to what she watches, since she's already a little copycat!

    @the ladies,

Totally agree with everything said above..
I give my son 1 hour of screen time a day.. The TV isn't on as a disguised babysitter..
Just had a mom on the phone who puts her kid in front of the TV by default..
She's busy with her phone and says that 2 is a difficult age. Her kid doesn't even talk yet, just says "eeheeh" and already gets a bowl of chips from me, don't get me wrong.

On my turn, I say yes, 2 is a difficult age, but if you put the right energy into your kids, it's not difficult either, not at 2, 3, 4, etc.. Yes is yes and no is no....

Clarity is the most important...the three R's Relaxation Routine and Reasoning.
Sounds maybe very old-fashioned, but it works..

I'm also one of those old-fashioned parents who loves outdoor play and wooden toys. I don't think any child has any disadvantages from it, it seems to me,
    but Delaya apparently thinks differently!
Hummeltje is not even 3 months old and she starts grumbling when we pause a movie!!!
That's how we discovered she really likes watching TV!
As soon as the TV turns on, she turns her head to look if she's lying on her play mat.
I fear we really need to keep a close eye on this, it's really too early..

By the way, to my great surprise, I saw that a friend of mine bought her 3-year-old a DS or whatever that thing is called!!!?
    Hello? She's only 3?
    That can't possibly be good!!

    here’s another old-fashioned girl

if the weather is nice, I also don’t prefer anything more than kids playing outside...
and the dirtier they get, the more fun they’ve had, I think

I notice this very clearly with my brother and sister.. these are really 2 kids who are growing up with the media world (sometimes so extreme) they often sit inside playing on their pc or their ds or wii... and they are also so pale compared to me. I used to always go outside as a child, even if the sun wasn’t shining much, and I was already making mud puddles in the sand with water etc.... playing board games when the weather is bad, all those things are fun...
I also like watching tv sometimes, but only in the evening and it’s just 2 shows I follow.. and if the weather is nice like in summer I just take her outside and sit reading a book or something..
I really want to pass this on to our girl, that playing outside is healthy and that she doesn’t need tv or those gadgets to have fun...

unfortunately, just like Olivia, we have to keep an eye on her because as soon as the tv comes on, she turns her head towards the screen... if we turn it off, she starts grumbling...
now I’m even trying to just put on the radio (going to buy a new one because mine broke) so the tv can stay off during the day (I always put it on a music channel so there’s some life in the house besides our girl) so hopefully I can keep her away from the tv this way...

    @ Olivia...
I also think 3 years old is quite young for a DS!!
not only for social contacts but also for the eyes, such things are not good...
my sister got her first laptop at 7! which I was really mad about. I was never allowed to buy one when I was younger and I had to wait until my 18th birthday before I got my own laptop... and my brother also got his own laptop at 7...
I personally also think it’s much too early.. but nowadays it’s also often the fault of many schools where they have to do homework via the pc (like with my brother and sister). kids get so used to all that technology that they’ve forgotten the characteristics of being a child! PLAYING OUTSIDE, PLAYING BOARD GAMES in bad weather.. PLAYING TOGETHER WITH OTHER KIDS OUTSIDE ETC.....
and now with those Ipad’s they’ve even turned the old board games into the virtual world, no wonder many kids today find the game boards we know NOTHING about..
    and that’s so sad!!!
here my partner and I spend as much time as we can every weekend playing games together with our neighbor and other friends like Junglespeed, Monopoly, Uno, name it... and this together with a drink and a snack is so much more fun than going out or hanging in front of the tv... or we go to the Ardennes for a weekend with everyone or Centerparcs... and we want to keep doing this with our little girl too, she was there during the pregnancy as well so now she can go everywhere too.. and hopefully she’ll learn this way that tv and computer and other virtual games aren’t the most important!!

    Love

    Yes, that's true Daphne,
I remember it so clearly, survival in the Ardennes with a backpack, snack sausages and washing in the river. Climbing trees, fishing with sticks tied with a thread,
    catching river crayfish..
It's a pity that parents often don't have time to engage in that anymore,
    "I'm busy, just watch TV."

I really hope I can manage to go camping now and then
    with the little one.
I have to be honest that the TV is already way too open here in the winter.
It helps that we have mountains and the sea here, that makes a big difference..
But I think it's important that parenting goes beyond: This is allowed and that is not allowed..

But look, I think about it like this and my 19-year-old brother was raised in the same way and he has become a 100% computer freak, has no job, doesn't leave the house,
no social, only virtual contacts, so sad.
My parents sometimes sit with their hands on their heads.
Very intelligent but emotionally severely underdeveloped!!

Delaya, I'm keeping an eye on her now, her head is slightly flattened on one side and I can well imagine why.
At one point I turned her so that the TV was behind her and she pushed herself off with her feet, belly up to get a glimpse upside down!!!
    Haha Curler!

    Greetings X

Oooh, it’s so survival-like, just bliss, right!!
We also went to the Ardennes for a weekend this summer, me with my big round belly haha, together with our neighbor. It was so blissful eating outside in a caravan, no TV, always walking in the forests with our dog and taking walks for hours and hours...
You can't have anything better!!! And this summer we're going there for a whole week (my father-in-law has his caravan there on a large provincial domain) and together with our little one so she can also taste the fresh outdoor air
Nothing is as blissful as hanging around outside
    So healthy, hmmmm

Our little one was also spinning around me there recently just to catch a glimpse of the TV.. I really turned it off haha I want interaction with my girl, not my girl interacting with that stupid TV all the time
Haha now she's happily laughing in her box at her mirror, blissful to hear, just haha

Yes, we've always been the trailer type too, just like gypsies!
Every year with the caravan. I lived in a caravan for 2 years on my parents' property and you really miss nothing.

Haha, it's nice to read that you're enjoying your girl so much.
I've been feeding her about 2 spoons of fruit puree for the past 3 days,
so she gets used to flavors early.
I was quite startled yesterday! She suddenly pulled the spoon out of my hand!!
She waved it around and chirped for 20 minutes!!
I made a video of it.
It looked like she was practicing Karate!! Hihihi!!

My daughter has no interest in TV (she really wanted to watch Voice Kids recently... she's 6 years old), she likes the iPad for games, max 15 minutes a day.
My son (3 years old), on the other hand, loves any moving image! iPad/TV/laptop, it doesn't matter. He's allowed to watch Koekeloere in the morning (for kids 3+) and in the afternoon when I'm cooking, Umizoomi is on. If it were up to him, the TV would be on all day long!!
Fortunately, he's an outdoor kid though; as soon as the sun is shining a bit, off we go outside, to ride bikes or dig in the sandbox!

We've been using a folding wagon lately! Also lovely!

I think it depends on what kids watch.
It's also good TV watching because many cartoons these days are educational.
They almost always have a learning theme.
It's just the time we're growing up with lots of TV watching. Look at my little girls, for example—they also watch cartoons on their tablet, but they pick up a lot of things from it too.
I don't think it can be left out of this era anymore.
    Greetings, Madelene
