Almost unbearable lower back pain

Hi everyone,
I'm 38 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing periods of severe back pain since the beginning of this month, starting from the middle and radiating upwards.
Most nights I wake up in pain, and it doesn't matter if I lie down, sit, or stand up.
The only thing that helps a bit is taking a shower or using a hot water bottle.
I'm not sure why this is happening because there are days when I don't have any discomfort at all.
Does anyone here have experience with this? Any tips? It's really incredibly painful, and I often end up shedding a good tear.
Thanks in advance,
Eva

    Call the midwife!

    Definitely call your midwife!
    Could that not indicate pre-eclampsia?
The pain you describe is definitely not normal.

Phew, I still remember that pain so well!!
I think you've already given birth by now? Are you feeling better again?
For me, that back pain disappeared right after the birth, well actually I didn't even feel it during the contractions anymore!
There was nothing serious going on, it was just that the pressure on all the ligaments and muscles became too much. I couldn't even drive a car anymore because of the pain.
I tried tying a wrap around my belly to reduce the pressure, but it didn't help.
