8 months pregnant - feeling bad

Hi lovely forum members,

Normally I only reply to someone else's topic, but now I'm creating one myself, hoping for experiences, tips, or just a listening ear.

We're expecting our second child, almost 8 months pregnant now.

The pregnancy has gone OK. Not perfect (a lot of vomiting, mild gestational diabetes, a small anomaly detected in the baby).

But for the past few days, I've been feeling like something's wrong.

My last check-up with the gynecologist showed my blood pressure was slightly elevated. I've also had headaches for several days. I keep reading about pre-eclampsia and naturally worry that it might happen to me too.

While, if I'm being realistic, the chance is small because the headache is mild, I don't see spots, no swelling, etc.

But still, this morning I woke up and immediately started crying with the thought 'my baby is dead'. Not long after, I luckily felt a lot of movement in my belly.

But what would you do? I already have an appointment on Wednesday, but that feels so far away. My gut feeling is just so bad.

To be honest, I know it's all in my head, but I'm so anxious.

Greetings,
An

    Hi An,
I myself had pregnancy-induced hypertension. I also felt really flu-like at the time. Maybe a weird question, but is this baby from the same father? If that's the case and you didn't have high blood pressure during your first pregnancy, the chance of getting it now is even smaller.
If the headache doesn't go away with painkillers and you really start feeling unwell, you can always call your midwife.

The midwives are there 24/7. Also for you! So if you need reassurance, even on Sunday morning at 9 AM, you can just call them. Do what feels right for you. It's all really exciting. Maybe you can come by tomorrow already. Wishing you lots of success with it. You're not alone in this!

    Dear An,

Share these feelings with your midwife; that's what they're there for.
Together with the midwife, you can figure out what works best for you to feel reassured that everything is going well with your baby. Headaches are normal; I also had them regularly in the last month(s). Now I have a cheerful 19-month-old. I had doubts too, but that's normal. Again, call your midwife and explain what you're experiencing.

    Thanks for your replies.
It is indeed the same father and I didn’t have any issues during my first pregnancy! So that’s already a bit reassuring.

And yes, I had an appointment last Friday, but if it were up to me, I’d want an ultrasound twice a day just to see if everything’s okay haha. Of course, that’s not possible!

I also had very high blood pressure a few times at the end, along with constant headaches. I went to the hospital 3 times via emergency, where they did a CTG scan and a urine test. They can check if you have pregnancy-induced hypertension (pre-eclampsia) based on those results, combined with your blood pressure.
Thankfully, nothing serious each time, but if you don't trust it, I'd suggest asking to be able to go to the hospital.

I recently saw that you can rent a home ultrasound for about 100 euros for 3 weeks. Maybe that's an option for you to see the baby several times a day at home?

If your blood pressure was already a bit high, you're having a headache now, and you're so worried, I'd suggest checking in with your midwife. The fact that you didn't have pre-eclampsia earlier in the pregnancy makes it less likely now, but not impossible. And if they can reassure you, that'll definitely help with the stress and headache.

A big hug, that bad feeling seems like it's probably unnecessary, but if you're really bothered by it, just call your midwife and say you'd feel better if they could take a quick look at the little one just to be safe. Hopefully, that'll give you some peace of mind. Better to check too often than too rarely, right? Lots of strength, girl. Hopefully, your little miracle arrives quickly and healthy.

Follow your gut! Talk to the midwife.

Yes, you can always call your midwife. Just don’t expect them to always do an ultrasound, because they usually just do a physical exam. I’m at the same stage and I definitely had bad headaches with my first one, now it’s a bit less, but I think it’s still coming. My blood pressure dropped really low at night, so that’s a bit different, it does make you dizzy. But otherwise, as long as the baby is moving, they hardly did anything. Even now, after I had an accident, they didn’t do an ultrasound after the physical exam because everything seemed fine.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks again for your kind words. I went to the doctor today after getting really sick yesterday. Turns out I have the flu!
Not fun at all, but my feelings about the pregnancy are better now, haha.

Glad to hear that, that's the most important thing. Hopefully, you'll recover quickly from the flu and can still enjoy your pregnancy for a bit longer.
