Christmas travel with a baby about a month old.

Oh girl, what a tricky situation... Well, I'd just have a chat with your mom about how things are and tell her how you feel—it seems tough to travel so far with such a little one.

If they understand, they'll definitely come to you for Christmas, I'm sure. Or you could suggest they come just once, and at Christmas everything could fall into place so you can visit the little one and celebrate Christmas all together. He's still so young, and by then you'll have found your rhythm with everything.

Such a tough situation, hopefully you'll figure it out soon and can celebrate Christmas with family! That would be nice, right!!

Lots of love and good luck with your upcoming birth!!

Personally, I wouldn't even consider it because you really need to get used to your new situation. You've barely done that at home, and then you're going away for a while with that little one. But... that's just my opinion. I have no experience with it, and I personally wouldn't choose to travel with such a tiny baby right away.
But I also see enough women around me who want to give birth in their home country and then fly back to the Netherlands with the little one after about 4 or 5 weeks.

When our daughter was 5 weeks old, we went to my parents' place in the north of the country for the first time. It's a 3-hour drive, but it went fine! You'll probably have to travel a bit longer, but you can take your time for the trip.
Another option is to host a maternity Christmas celebration at your place and invite everyone from the Netherlands. You'll be cozy at home and have everything within reach.

    Hi Anoniem,

Our girl is 4.5 weeks old right now, and I wouldn't have a problem taking a big trip with her now. But that's assuming our situation: despite the C-section, I'm feeling pretty good, the girl is very easy-going, sleeps a lot, and eats well. So with her, I'd have no issues at all right now. Stability doesn't seem like a problem to me, but we're also consciously trying to give our girl some flexibility. She really sleeps anywhere these days, which makes things easier.

But of course, I don't know how you're feeling after the birth or how your son is doing... It might be quite intense: a long trip first, then a new environment, lots of visitors, and of course, your broken nights. In short, I can't say what would be best for your situation, but I hope you can make the right decision soon. I do think it's your choice, and other people should just accept that... You only become a mother once for the first time, and that's no small thing!

I was in a similar situation two years ago (family vacation). I made it clear beforehand that I wanted to take it day by day, because I didn’t know how things would go for me and our little boy after the birth. You can’t know in advance, but my intention was to go along. However, at the time of that vacation, our son was only three weeks old (we were both doing fine). You’re really still in the postpartum period, and I wasn’t in the mood for a vacation at all. I really needed to focus on my “new life” and just enjoy our new family situation. So we decided at the last minute not to go. Luckily, my husband felt the same way.

I’m curious what you’ll end up deciding.

Although... you're moving into a house to be together with your family... and I would end up in an overcrowded holiday home with the baby, mostly sitting there alone with my son while everyone else goes swimming, eating out, or going out... Maybe it's not really a similar situation after all..

From my own experience, I know I’d never go out with a baby aged 4-6 weeks. Not because I wouldn’t want to, but it’s really still way too early for the baby and for yourself.

I think it’s brave that you want to try, and who knows, by then it might go so smoothly that you won’t have any issues at all. But if you asked me, as a mom of three who’s really not that naive, how big the chance is... very small.

I’ve also noticed how important it is not to take on too much during the postpartum period. It’s already pretty heavy, and before you know it, it’s just too hectic for your little one or for yourself.
