Large baby bump ultrasound at 36 weeks

Hi everyone,

Had my last check-up yesterday (I'm 37 weeks pregnant today) and it turned out the baby has a large abdominal circumference. They haven't checked my sugar levels lately. Now, with big babies, it can happen that they grow so well because they're getting a lot of sugar.........I don't exactly overindulge in sweets, by the way. The gynecologist didn't think it necessary for me to come back for more checks, because the baby's abdominal growth curve was still under the upper limit. So no further investigation was needed.

I only have 2 weeks left (the baby will be induced on November 15th due to a history of shoulder dystocia!) but I'm still a bit worried somewhere.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Best, Liesbeth

    Hi Liesbeth,

I was under care since 32 weeks because of a large baby. What I noticed is that the ultrasound and the doctor’s assessment of how 'serious' it was seemed to vary from week to week, so whether I fell under or above which curve. That didn't really give me much confidence or certainty.

If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't just agree but would ask for another check-up next week just to be sure.

I don't want to worry you because in my case, there was ultimately nothing wrong except for a large baby. And the doctor is probably right too, but I think it's better to be cautious.

Let us know how it goes?

    Good luck, Sylvia

I find this really strange because at our hospital, once you're over 37 weeks, you have to come every week.

Here too, from next week on, every week check-up. I personally would still ask for extra check-ups, okay!

I also find it weird that you don't have any more control until the birth.. I'm going this month twice because otherwise it didn't fit, so Nov 8 and 20, and then I'm 15 Dec and from then on every week.. I even have 2 ultrasounds in January where there are only 3 days between them.. (Jan 4 and then Jan 7) and Jan 15 is my last one that according to them they wouldn't do because our girl is a month ahead of schedule in terms of weight and length..
My advice: if you're not sure, go for another check-up just to put your mind at ease!!
A big baby is fine now, but if you don't feel comfortable about it, definitely go for another check-up!! Stress in these last 2 weeks is really unnecessary, both for you and your little one!

    Enjoy your last weeks!!
    Love!!

At our place, the belly size also grew two weeks ahead of schedule. I immediately stopped consuming sugar (even though I didn’t have any issues with sugar) and that seemed to help. Also, I cut back on carbs, fruit juices, etc.
But... another gynecologist said that after 30 weeks, an ultrasound can give a very false-positive picture. Because your baby is already so big, it's really hard to get an accurate measurement. So I wouldn't worry too much if you don't have gestational diabetes and everything else is fine with you and the baby.

    Hi everyone,
I found out a few days ago that the baby's belly is almost 7 weeks ahead compared to the rest. I'm currently 32 weeks along. Next Monday, I'm going back for the 3rd growth ultrasound with the gynecologist. Does anyone have experience with such a big difference in growth? I'm a bit worried.
    Greetings!

    Hi Jackie,
My son's abdominal circumference was 5 weeks behind the growth curve. He was already quite big throughout the whole pregnancy. I ended up giving birth via a gynecologist. But initially, if I had given birth at 38 weeks, it would have been under midwife supervision only, but mandatory in the hospital if something went wrong. So I ended up with a gynecologist and was induced at 39.4 weeks due to rising blood pressure and the baby being big enough. My son was 100% healthy and just a bit bigger at 4330 grams. His belly was a bit bigger than average after birth, but he has grown into it. Now he's in good proportions.

Our baby's tummy is also protruding. Do I need to worry about it in four weeks?

As you could read in my previous post, nothing was wrong with me.

    Hi Sb.
My son doesn't have any other allergies.

Went today for a 32-week ultrasound because of a low-lying placenta, and suddenly they started talking about the baby's tummy. It's slightly larger than average, and I'm now being referred to the ZHuis to see a gynecologist.
They didn't talk at all today about what this could mean or what the cause might be, and it's making me quite worried.
