Amniotic fluid?

Lynn
I've had discharge the whole pregnancy, and it's been sticky since the beginning, but now I even get the edges of my underwear wet every time...

Is it still just discharge, or is there amniotic fluid mixed in?

Lynn, amniotic fluid smells a bit sweet. If in doubt, always contact your midwife or gynecologist.

I also had a lot of discharge towards the end of my pregnancy, I think that's normal. But I thought using liners wasn't recommended? Better to change your underwear a few times a day. Regarding amniotic fluid, it is indeed sweet-smelling and thinner. If you're really unsure, give them a call, but you could also try wiping all the discharge away, and then hold your hand under it or something to see if it drips? I only had my waters break at 41 weeks as the start of labor, and that was really quite a lot. I also felt it pop then.. At my miscarriage at 12 weeks, I felt it pop too, and then amniotic fluid came out.. I don't know if it's always like that? It could also be a high membrane tear or something?

It could be, unfortunately, but it's true, it could also be urine!
You can definitely use panty liners, but in case of doubt about amniotic fluid, it's best to use unscented or odorless pads.
That way, you (and the midwife) can better recognize what kind of fluid you're losing!
I'm currently 38+2 weeks and also experiencing more discharge plus some urine, and with almost every drop I think, "Here we go again," especially when I'm out and about hahaha

Less than 10% of births start with the rupture of membranes, so the chance is there but not very big!
If in doubt, always call your midwife. They're the experts! Good luck

Yeah, tricky. With my daughter, I had bleeding every time, and when my water broke, it wasn't clearly visible either. I spent the whole week at home with probably already ruptured membranes, indeed without really knowing it. She was born at 34.5 weeks. So with an infection because I just washed with soap.

Now, whenever I bend over or move, wetness comes out, sometimes it's really discharge, but also just a lot of normal wetness. And without panty liners, I wouldn't go to work because I'd be walking around with wet pants all day.

That’s not nice, indeed. With me, changing into clean underwear 2-3 times a day was enough so it didn’t get so wet. But anyway. If you feel it with every movement when you exert pressure on your belly, I’d still suggest checking with your midwife. Can’t hurt.

You should indeed call your midwife right away, especially since you're losing something with movements. Try to catch some of it (use a panty pad with a plastic bag over it). Your midwife can then take some from the plastic bag and test whether it's amniotic fluid or not.

Hope you’ve been called by now.

Hey, I also lost my water with my son. It was at night and I had to pee. I was already 39 weeks. On my way to the toilet, I lost water which I mistook for urine and thought I had peed myself . I had also read somewhere that you should go to the toilet once and see: you can hold in urine, but you can't hold in amniotic fluid. So I went to the toilet and 'pushed'. When I lost fluid, I held back from looking to see if it stopped or if it was still coming. It was still coming, so I went to the hospital. With me, it wasn't a huge amount either, just little drops with movement. But indeed, as mentioned above a few times: if you're unsure, always call! Better to call once too often than not enough.. good luck

Thankfully, it wasn’t amniotic fluid leaking.

But my blood pressure did shoot up a bit.
And they felt the baby was a bit small two weeks ago.
Extra monitoring... Growth scan today. I’m curious to see.

Still good that you went, right! Hopefully it's not too bad and they keep an extra close eye on your little one Good luck with the ultrasound today!

Lucky Lynn that it's not amniotic fluid! Good luck with the ultrasound! Let us know how it goes?

Had a double check yesterday, but indeed it wasn't amniotic fluid.

The midwife found the torso large and the head and legs small on the ultrasound.

If they had suspected anything, they would have referred me to the hospital. They checked everything again, and everything seems completely normal.

I just have a gigantic swollen foot hahaha
  14. Mama vanJ #15

Glad you're okay, Lynn! But is the big foot due to fluid or an accident?

Water retention, indeed, there is some too. Can't really get rid of it... I guess it'll stay until delivery... Well, if that's all there is.

Drink plenty of fluids and keep your leg elevated. And often, you're back to normal pretty quickly after giving birth! I actually had a swollen foot right after mine. That was also fluid, and it was back to normal within a day.
