Low birth weight

Hi! I'm 32 weeks pregnant now. I just found out that our girl is weighing too little. 1kg and 85 grams...

They already mentioned they want to induce her at 37 weeks... but I'm not really keen on that because there's a big chance she'll have to go into the incubator. And that just breaks my heart. The weird thing is that our OB-GYN isn't prescribing bed rest. I do have to go for check-ups twice a week though. Has anyone else had experience with this?

Hi mama2, that's really unfortunate. What's the reason they want to bring the little one out at 37 weeks? I'd think let them stay in a bit longer, hoping the baby gains a bit more weight. But hey, I'm no doctor. It's all so exciting.

Was this the first scan? I'd really be curious to see the growth in 2 weeks, then you can draw conclusions, I think.

My sister gave birth to a little girl last year because she didn't have enough milk, and she's almost 1 year old now and looks completely fine, really tiny and cute.

And did she have to stay in the incubator? How much did she weigh at birth?

    Hi girl,
That kind of message is always so upsetting! I’m now the mother of a beautiful son who’s almost 4 months old. At 32 weeks of pregnancy, he also seemed to be lagging behind a lot, and I had a CTG every other day and a Doppler ultrasound once a week. In the end, they could stretch it out to almost 39 weeks, and it turned out to be less of a worry than expected. A little guy indeed: 2460 grams and 44 cm. But he caught up in no time. He kept his temperature perfectly and didn’t lose much weight. After 3 days, we were already home, and now at 4 months, you can’t see anything anymore. Our man is already 63 cm and 6060 grams! So don’t worry too much! Sometimes it turns out to be less of a problem when they’re born, and they’re often fighters who grow really quickly at the start to make up for the deficits.

Wishing you lots of success in these last few weeks!

Hellooo! Just introducing myself I'm also pregnant with my first baby, currently 37 weeks with a girl.
I recognize a few points from your story. Here too, at every growth scan, we were told she was lagging a few weeks behind in weight and size.
At the 36-week scan, this delay suddenly became too large.... Her head matched 35 weeks, but her belly and legs were 4 weeks behind. I had to go straight to monitoring, appointments were made for twice a week monitoring plus an ultrasound every week until she's born. And preferably stretch everything out to 41 weeks, so she had enough time to catch up. And for the rest, bed rest was prescribed.
I wasn't doing so well back then. Everything happened so fast and I felt so bad because of it.... I've always had a small belly, I barely gained weight, but never thought the baby was doing "poorly".
Now, after a full week, three monitors and a growth scan later, our girl is doing well with her size and weight. She weighs an estimated 2400 grams at 37 weeks. Still too little, but she has enough time to catch up. They estimate her birth weight at 3 kg.
I use the word "estimate" because that's what it really is! They can always be off. It seems harsh to me that she gained 400 grams in a week just by lying flat...
I wouldn't pin too much on the estimated birth weight. Resting well definitely helps; here I also got the tip to lie on my left side for an hour after eating so there's good blood flow through the umbilical cord.
I also think it's a bit weird that they want to induce your baby at 37 weeks? Are there maybe other reasons? Maybe ask for more explanation before they just induce you. Here, she's supposed to reach 40 weeks, preferably even go past that.
Our girl was also estimated at 1 kg when she was 32 weeks, and nothing was said about it then.
Good luck anyway and enjoy your pregnancy!

Oh my, now you've really boarded the train without being allowed off, it seems! Intense! Luckily, you're in good hands, but indeed, you'd rather be with your baby.. Tough, huh! I wish you lots of strength and a good outcome!
