scared of tearing

Ladies, question.
My niece has given birth to a healthy boy! I'm at 10 weeks myself, so it's exciting.
Now, my niece tore completely during childbirth. So badly that she had to go to the operating room, fully under anesthesia to get it stitched up. I guess you can't really prevent that, and if it happens, it happens... but do you know if you can try to prevent it, or if it happens, is it really very painful or is it not that bad? I'm so scared right now!!!!!!!

As long as you listen carefully to the midwife and only push when THEY say you should, I think you can keep it under control pretty well.

You could always be the one who gets really unlucky, but all the stories I know have ended well!

Well, I'm not completely over the moon;-) but during my 2nd birth... Naomi came out with her hand pressed against her cheek and arm/elbow (well, I'm not THAT wide, haha) which caused one labia to tear in half and a bit more tearing below... I didn't feel anything at the time when it happened during a pushing contraction.
I was stitched up afterwards and you can't see anything anymore after a while :-)
So yes, with listening you'll get to the end, but situations like mine where the baby comes out so quickly, there's little you can do about it..
Don't be scared! It'll definitely go well!

    Hi ladies

I'm really scared of that too! It's been my biggest fear for months, and with 7 weeks left to go, my heart races at 200 bpm just thinking about it.

My sister-in-law gave birth yesterday, and they had to stitch her up too. Sometimes I just wish for a C-section (apparently it's less painful).

    Anyway, good luck, girls!

    Warm wishes

    Hi Naimagen,
I already replied above.. But I also had a C-section (emergency C-section). Yeah, you know, then they cut through 6 layers;-) and you get stitched up, well, in another place but still, this remains a pretty heavy abdominal surgery.. maybe less painful at the moment itself but don't underestimate the time afterwards he...
I recovered from it very quickly.... But I also know a lady (mother from school) who didn't recover so quickly at all and was quite affected by it...
The 2nd time I gave birth normally... but I don't know what's better though haha... Just give me the normal way then... it's all a bit of a mess...
You can do it girl! Don't worry too much.. and who knows, maybe you won't tear at all or only a little!:-)

Had two births and no tearing at all, nothing! Even though our youngest weighed 4380 grams at birth. It's mainly important to listen carefully to the midwife/doctor when the head is out and you need to puff out the pushing urge (so you mustn't push), that's when most women tear. I still hear from many that they find it a relief when they do tear a bit while the baby can't come out yet because then they feel there's space. And I often hear that they heal quickly!
