baby bed

I've been debating for a while what kind of crib to get, so maybe you guys can give me some advice.

Through my husband's mom, we got a 60x120cm baby/toddler bed, but the downside is that the mattress base isn't height-adjustable. So the baby would always lie at the very bottom of the crib, which seems exhausting to me to lift the baby in and out every time, especially at night during breastfeeding.

So I was thinking of maybe buying a co-sleeper for the first few months, but our bed has an extra border around it, so it doesn't fit nicely and that seems unsafe to me. Another option is one of those small Childwood 40x90cm cribs, because the mattress base there is at a good height, so that seems easier. A friend also suggested just putting a baby carrier on a small table next to the bed for the first few months, but I'm not sure if I trust that regarding stability, etc.

Letting the baby sleep in our bed, as I sometimes hear, I don't trust myself to do that, so I definitely want her to have her own crib next to ours.

I don't know anymore . Experienced moms, how did you handle it for the first few months?

Haha there's so much choice, right!

I used a height-adjustable crib for my son. He slept high up until about 6/7 months, then I lowered it. We live in the attic and the baby room was basically downstairs, but I put the crib next to my bed, also for breastfeeding. On very hot summer days, since my son was born in May, we slept downstairs and he slept in a travel cot, so low down. It wasn't really a big deal; I did the same on holiday that summer. Sometimes I even fell asleep while he was next to me with the crib pushed right up against the bed so he couldn't roll out. It was more for my own peace of mind because you're still alert even when you're asleep. Actually, you don't need to be so scared of rolling over onto him because as a mother breastfeeding, your natural instinct is to protect your baby. You'll notice that you wake up immediately from any other movement or breath, and then you're fully awake. Mother's instinct, hehe

I'm not such a fan of a bassinet. It's very cute, but after 6 months he can basically move on, which I personally think is a waste. My second son will use the crib from my first. I think I'll do it the same way again, but I'm more relaxed about co-sleeping now because with your first you're still very careful about it.

It turned into quite a story, haha! Good luck with your choice! I think once the baby is here, you'll naturally find what works best for you.

With the first one, we still had a really big bedroom, so we just put the crib in our room. It was adjustable in height. I don’t mind the height that much, but I think the littlest ones shouldn’t be too close to the ground because it’s always drafty and colder down there.
I also thought a bassinet was a waste of money.
With the second one, we didn’t have as much space anymore, so we looked for something smaller. We did buy a co-sleeper that had 3 settings: as a co-sleeper, as a bassinet, and as a rocking bassinet.
The co-sleeper came with a hook over the edge of our bed, and with an extra-wide mattress, it sat right next to my mattress.
Our third one is on the way now, and we’ve got the bassinet. We can use it nicely again.

Thank you for your responses, Knuffel and MamaN! That gives me something to think about again Maybe I'll look for an affordable second-hand co-sleeper.
Hihi, I also hear from friends that they're more relaxed about co-sleeping with their second child in their bed.

    We have this one:

The cheapest I could find back then. Couldn't really find anything on Marktplaats either. And it comes with a mattress that fits perfectly.
I'm not so keen on sleeping in bed. I do believe you won't end up lying on your child, and our first one sometimes slept with us. In the very beginning, we had him on his changing mat between our pillows. A changing mat has a slightly raised edge, so the baby doesn't roll over it. That was a tip from the midwife.
But our first one was a drama with sleeping, and I'm always a bit hesitant about sleeping in our bed. Afraid they'll never want to sleep in their own bed again????

Oh, that does look good indeed for a nice price. Thanks for the tip!
