Is fabric softener bad?

Driven by my nesting instinct, I went ahead and washed all the baby clothes, including fabric softener. I later read that this isn't advisable... who knew. Would it help to wash the clothes again without softener? What's the wise thing to do? I'd love to hear your experiences and tips. Thanks!

    I personally never wash with fabric softener because it has so much perfume in it... I would definitely wash without it, just in case your baby reacts allergically... Better safe than sorry.

    Thanks for your reply. I did wash it again without... Hopefully that washed away the softener.
