Lots of little pains

Hi ladies,

I’m now 36 weeks pregnant. Since Monday, I’ve been experiencing quite a bit of pain in my lower belly, legs, and back.

I went to see the midwife on Monday, and she mentioned false labor/engagement contractions. This cramping and stabbing pain is still there now, and I can’t find any comfortable position anymore. I went back for a check-up yesterday, and the baby is fully engaged, but I still have no dilation and no contractions that indicate labor is starting. I’m wondering if anyone here has experienced something similar and what might have been going on. I’m sleeping terribly and can barely walk upright... Just thinking about having to go through this for at least another 4 weeks makes me feel overwhelmed.

Best,

With my first pregnancy, I had this too from 36 weeks. Stabbing pains down low, pain in my lower back and groin. She was also fully engaged by then. I slept terribly because every position was uncomfortable. Eventually, I was induced at 38 weeks, and that’s when it stayed. Now I’m pregnant with my second, 35 weeks, and getting occasional twinges.

    Hi Nancy,
Thanks for your reply. What’s been on our minds is that we think I might be further along than the midwife believes. When I calculated from my last period, the first ultrasound at 9 weeks (we thought) showed 8+2. So we deliberately waited 5 weeks for the 12-week scan instead of scheduling it at the beginning of the week (normally I can add a week every Tuesday), and then we were told it was only 11+3. During the 20-week scan, they found the little one already bigger and heavier than average for that week. If I add all that up, I’ll be at least one week and up to two weeks further along than what’s currently assumed.
Of course, I shouldn’t obsess over it, but I’m still wondering if it could really be like that...

Sometimes you have a late ovulation and conception happened later than expected. Up to 12 weeks, all babies grow about the same, which is how they estimate the duration of the pregnancy. It might differ by a few days, but two weeks is quite a big difference. From 12 weeks onwards, every baby grows differently; some a bit slower and others a bit faster than average, so it's possible your baby was bigger at 20 weeks. I have a small baby myself but am actually 35 weeks pregnant.

The baby will let you know when it's time, maybe even a bit earlier than expected... And well, the end of pregnancy often comes with pains and discomfort... Hang in there a little longer, it's all worth it.
